I'm debating if i should get a meal plan next yr

not close at all. unless you have a car. then again, nothing is close to campus…unless you have a car.

wait till you get in first.

dats where we da booze son

lawl . . .

If you have a car it’s not too far, not like you’d be able to lug much groceries without one anyway. That said, safeway/trader joes, etc. aren’t usually that expensive anyway.

wait, you haven’t even gotten an acceptance letter or are a continuing student? what the ell.

Haha don’t you have to buy a meal plan if you’re living on campus? At least, I believe that’s how it is at some other UC’s.

@chococookie, if you live in the dorms, your housing fee includes a meal plan, with the amount varying depending on the plan you choose.

Back to OP question, it would not be worth it unless you did have a car (or at least knew someone you could ride with for your visits to Costco). The distance through public transportation would be too much to bring back, especially since you’d be buying lots of bulk food.

Dorms come with a meal plan. If you live off campus, though, considering the amount of good restaurants around, you should go without a meal plan.

The nearest Costco is approximately 8mi away from campus, not easily accessible by public transit. In other words - it’s infeasible unless you have a car. There might be a few things you might be able to get away with if you have a bike, but for most things: car.

But wait - it’s almost infeasible to have a car in Berkeley. :)

Easy. Rent a Zipcar for $7-9/hr. My daughter does it all the time.

What are some stores/restaurants near to the campus? I’d like to know as well, I’ve applied too. If there’s a Cheesecake Factory anywhere near, UC Berkeley will become my first choice. :)

the closest thing to the Cheesecake Factory is a Subway.

@anonymousername: LOL good one. It’ll soon be two right next to each other if I’m not mistaken.

@figuresk8ting: The closest Cheesecake factory is on Geary Street in SF. Probably the best way to get there would be by BART and MUNI. However, I would like to suggest, if you’ve never heard/been to Cheeseboard, I think many Berkeley students would say that it’s pretty awesome too.

There are a ton of restaurants around campus, and even better ones a short bus ride away.

I’ve become a Yelp fanatic ever since I got here.

@aveng, are Zipcars usually available for students. When I visited campus, I only saw a few zipcars parked outside campus. Basically, can your daughter usually find Zipcars ready to use?

Ah, no cheesecake then, I’m sure I won’t starve, sounds like there’s some really neat places there. Subway is always good. :3 Interesting that most freshmen don’t have cars though… I’d probably have to fly home anyway.
