Costco near Campus?

The closest one is all the way up in Richmond, about 5 miles away - 20 minute drive.

Is it easy to get to Oakland whenever you want to (without a car)? Because I'm sure you can find most of the stores over there...

Just go to Safeway. The 51 (or is it the 52L?) takes you directly to it (right down College street)

I think the 51 eventually goes to Oakland. You can also take BART there.

no, the 40 eventually goes to Oakland....as I unfortunately found out the hard way one day :(

Actually, the 40 no longer exists. The route that the 40 used to take (all the way down Telegraph into Oakland) is now replaced by the 1 and the 1R. The 51 ALSO goes into Oakland, but it goes all the way down College instead. There is a Safeway on College that's pretty easy to get to if you take the 51.

what do you mean by 51? Is it a bus?

Yes, the 51 is a bus line on AC Transit. There are two bus systems that you can use around campus: AC Transit, which serves all of Alameda county (and crossbay), and Bear Transit, which serves just around the university.

So does this bus stop right by safeway??? Also, how much
is it to ride the bus to safeway and back??
^_^

all students can get an AC Transit pass because the charge is already included in our registration fees, right?

The 51.... just thinking about the 51 makes me anxious to get back up to Cal! :)

Argh, 51. :P

Yes, you get an AC Transit pass by virtue of paying your fees (if you look at the break-down, it's in there -- less than $60 for unlimited rides for a semester, which is awesome), but you have to go to the Cal 1 Card office at lower Sproul in order to get the sticker for your ID card.

i believe you can get to costco by taking the 7 or 52L, but it probably takes about an hour and a half by bus.

Closest Costco is--as someone said already--in Richmond. It's a walkable distance from the El Cerrito Plaza BART (...30 minutes or so, I'd think?), but driving is much much better.

I actually think the most convenient Safeway from campus is the one on Shattuck, by the Gourmet Ghetto...you can take the 7, the 9, or the 43 (the latter two stop on Shattuck) and get off around Rose.
