How colleges see applicants' GPA

Hi, I have a question about GPA in the college admissions process.

I'm competiting with several students from my school for top schools (including ivies). I have attended my high school since 9th grade, and so my 9th grade GPA is factored into my total GPA. On the other hand, some people came in 10th grade, and so their 9th grade GPA is not included in their total GPA. Since the 9th grade GPA is not weighted at all, it significantly brings down my GPA, while those who came in 10th grade or later do not face this problem. Naturally, their total weighted GPA is much higher than mine.

Are colleges aware of these differences when evaluating applicants' gpa within the same school? Am I put at a disadvantage because of this problem?

I recommend talking to your college counselor, everything works differently at some schools.

Your school profile WILL tell them the distribution of GPAs, you might look like you aren’t doing so well. That would be a disadvantage

There is a spot in the common app that asks if you’ve transferred to the HS or if you’ve been there the whole time. This gives the adcoms the information you are asking about. The schools would take into consideration the fact that freshman year is not weighted, an issue at several schools including ours. If folks transfer just to get that advantage, our school system is getting into a really sorry state.
