how competitive is economics/business

so i've been doing a lot of reading on this forum, and i've learned that engineering and the sciences are really competitive here. but i've seen at least a couple say that economics is as competitive as engineering and biology or chemistry. someone said a 3.45 gpa is actually fairly difficult to attain.. is that valid?

also, how often are there double majors in economics and business while graduating in 4 years? (i'll be trying for haas) i assume the two have many overlapping classes, but i've heard with the recent financial crisis, many students need to stay longer to complete their double majors.

i ask because i'm currently deciding between usc, wustl, and berkeley. i'm already guaranteed a double major in economics AND business at both usc and wustl, but neither at berkeley.. while i think i will be a pretty good student at cal, i don't want put up with so much risk at berkeley when i have security at the other two. i can get a much higher gpa at usc, and probably a decent one at wustl.. what are your thoughts?

finally, can you guys take the time and give me your thoughts for deciding between the three? thanks a lot!

For Haas, you have to graduate in 4 years… so nearly 100% graduate in 4 years. Econ/Haas combo is very doable… many people do it cause the pre-reqs overlap so much.

And it’s somewhat competitive, but should be fine assuming that you come from a decent high school and have a decent background  You just need a 3.0 to get into Econ, so it’s not that bad :)
