How conservative is Duke?

I was just wondering how conservative duke is. I'm an extremely liberal person and I wanted to know if Duke is realy as right-winged as people say it is.

Meh, I don't think that the campus is that conservative. I mean, I have friends who are conservative, and others who are liberal. We come from all walks of life.

I mean, any national university is going to be really liberal, esp. in the faculty. Duke may be conservative relative to that more general picture, but that doesn't make us a conservative school by any means.

And, frankly, even if we were, it's usually better for kids to go to the place where they're in the minority.

I consider myself incredibly liberal, and I've never felt uncomfortable at Duke. Yes, I've met people whose opinions I strongly disagree with, but as BDM said that's definitely something that you actually WANT in a college experience -- it's one of those "learning outside the classroom" things that will help you grow as a person. But in my experience, most people I know are liberal -- that could probably be because as a very liberal person, I tend to become friends with liberal people, but yeah. You will definitely not be in a minority.

same experience as bandcampgirl - quite liberal.

Interestingly enough, Duke has a few faculty members who are leading Marxist scholars.

Google "liberal bias" at DukeChronicle.com, haha

The fact that theres so much coverage of "liberal bias" accusations might actually prove its more conservative...who knows?

Plenty of conservatives, plenty of liberals, and plenty of room inbetween. I wouldn't worry about going to Duke because you'd be in a political minority, because that is by no means the case.
