Are liberal Northerners welcome??

I guess this is for current students and such:

I've looked on the website and while Duke lists that 19% of a typical class comes from Mid-Atlantic region and 15% from the Northeast, even though I don't know my decision, I'm wondering if Southern culture really dominates at Duke. Obviously, Duke is in the South and a large proportion of students are from there, but I figured that the atmosphere at Duke is fairly liberal. Am I wrong in this assumption (and yes, I know when you assume, you make an ass out of you and me)? I'm a liberal democrat and a feminist- would I fit in?

i am from north carolina and am hoping that duke is at least a semi-liberal safehaven from the rest of the state (besides chapel hill). from what i know and the people i know at duke, it is not predominantly conservative, but granted, it is a private institution with a lot of 'old money' tied up in it, so i'm sure you're likely to get a mix of the two.

short answer: they don't care what kind of political affiliation you have, and no one will ask you because it's not important.

yeah, you would definetely fit in....it seems that the conservative minority bands together

I consulted Facebook on this question. Very Liberal, Liberal, Moderate, Conservative had more than 500 people. Very Conservative had 112, Apathetic had 327, Libertarian had 229, and Other had 348. Sounds like a good mix, eh? :)

Duke and UNC are blue in a red state- literally. Many of the faculty take feminism seriously, although many students don't.
