How critical is it to update FAFSA to "filed" status ASAP?

We filed the FAFSA back in January with a "will file" status. We are still waiting to file the 2008 tax return because we are awaiting a corrected 1099 from one payer. The FAFSA numbers won't change, but we can't update to "filed" status yet. Will this hold up financial aid offers from colleges? Is there a specific deadline for when you have to update the status to "filed"?

not sure if there is a deadline and not having the 'will file' probably won't affect you getting an initial offer of aid, but do understand that IF your numbers changed alot when you do change the status, the FA package could change.

No specific deadline for changing to "filed" status. The IRS gives you till August to file without explanation (although you have to file by April 15 to request the no-questions-asked extension). Note: extension to file is not the same as extension to pay. However, the school will update your FA package based upon actual. If you overestimated income (change results in lower EFC), the longer you wait, the more likely they don't have any more FA to award.
