How detrimental is quitting a sport senior year?

I'm an upcoming senior and have played tennis since I was a freshman. I played varsity as a junior and if challenge matches went according to plan, would most likely make varsity again this year. It is up in the air however because my team is very competitive.

I love the sport but I'm not sure it's where I should be focusing my efforts. My top choice school is Boston College, which is big on volunteering. I figured i would have time to get more community service in if I dropped the time commitment of tennis. Our coach recently got fired and most of the girls are very catty and made last season a painful experience. I'm not sure I want to put myself through that again. I also plan on getting college applications in and possibly apply to BC early action, so I would need that extra time to put in to my applications. My senior year schedule is the most rigorous I've ever taken, with 5 AP's and no study hall. If I quit, i wouldn't run into the problem of having my grades suffer because of meets running late and too much stress from constant invites and tournaments. My school also requires a senior service project that requires lots of time.

How hurtful is quitting a sport senior year in order to focus on my academics and to minimize stress? I would continue to play recreationally but I'm just not sure if playing for the school is the right thing for me at the moment. My worst fear is that the admissions offices will look down on me for being not committed or something.

I also have two jobs if that matters.

Not a huge deal, especially if you have two jobs to justify it.

It sounds like you have valid reasons for not continuing the sport this upcoming season. I really doubt this one thing would be a deciding factor in rejecting you as long as the rest of your application is strong.

Yes, since you have many valid reasons it is just fine. Do you have other consistent ECs?

Quit. Enjoy all the free time you used to devote to tennis.

Not worth the stress and putting up with stupid girls.
Retake SATs/ACT if needed, polish your essays.

Quit tennis if you don’t want to do it anymore! I’m quitting marching band in my senior year because I hate it and want to keep my job ;D

I’m first chair alto sax in our top band and a member of marching band. Thanks for the feedback guys, hopefully my parents will understand!

Definitely not a big deal if there’s even the smallest excuse for it. I quit softball senior year so that I could take a college course and it didn’t seem to adversely affect any college decisions. Definitely worth it!
