How did this person get accepted?

No, test scores aren't everything. Who said they were? You have been sadly misinformed.

The guy in question is clearly an excellent student and a hard worker. I'm sure he will do very well at UF.

The study showed that how the majority percieves URM's does affect their perceptions of themselves, and thus affect their test performance. Without the idea that URMs are less intelligent and/or cannot take tests, they would not be encumbered by social, political, economic, and historical discrimination based on looking different.

I think it's more the fact that many URMs, do to the long history of governmental discrimination, often live in poor, urban environments.

Guys, you might want to read this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=273673

I smell something fishy here...

thast my post, thast about me.....i didnt get a 1380 out of 2400 like thsi person i know, mine was out of 1600......and im not in top 5% liek he is, im in top 6% which is what it says

so the same GPA drops a whole percent in rank?

So you guys HAVE the EXACT GPA, the EXACT AP schedule, the EXACT race, the EXACT college choices and the EXACT SAT? Oh wait pardon me, your scale was out of 1600 while his was out of 2400. You think anyone is going to buy it here?

that is his schedule, and there was anoher person who also applied to the same colleges as me. and im not sure thats his GPA but he has made the same grades as me so i assume it is unless he took some other classes online. im not gonan waste my time putting down an individual for getting accepted somewhere and it happens to be me....that's retarded. im quite sure im getting into UF. thanks.

i live in florida too. 1380 is a perfectly viable score for UF. people from my school have gotten in with lower test scores, lower GPAs, and less APs. Standards are really not that incredibly high, i know one of my friends at UF had a 1360 barely in the top 10% and got into UF. Granted, another kid at my school who went there scored in the 1500s, but they both say the school has their fair share of 1200s and below 30 ACTs.
UF admission is crazy, though, a couple of people with stats like mid-1300s, #6 and 9 in the class got rejected from UF and are at FIU.

lol...yah its out of 2400..i mean seriously lol

URM. i hate aff. action.

Again...making assumtions about race, lovely. Could have had other things that were outstanding like recs, essays, special talent, geo diversity, etc...funny how bitter kids can be--when it affects what they want. Self-justification, hmmm?!

Maybe you should hate inequality at the primary or secondary school levels, or maybe under-funded public schools, or higher insurance, loan, and housing costs that affect low-income applicants. How about recognizing that the majority sometimes treats those that look different in a different way than those who look the same?

AA is a result of social, political, economic pressure caused by those who are, for better or worse, in the majority.

Better yet, use some of that anger to do something to change the inequity BEFORE you apply to college, perhaps in a neighborhood different than your own.

Be careful Aqua, or some might see you as an underperforming, affluent white girl--even though you've had a lot of perks.

Obviously, this candidate is able to handle a rigorous academic program (judging by GPA & APs listed). ANY person, no matter what color, with those stats would be a good bet for admissions --- the academic performance would make the low SAT a nonissue. Would a white candidate get the break ... I don't know. Does it really matter? There are many more white candidates than black, so the criteria for choosing them can be more rigidly fixed. Colleges need to try to put a well-balanced class in place. Nothing about the college admissions process is "fair" --- because it is not a cut & dried, "if you have this, you'll be accepted" kind of thing (think relatives, athletics, ability to pay, etc).

I have a brother who had perfect SATs in high school. Big deal. This past year, he got fired from his job --- working on an automotive assembly line --- and he spent most of the summer living in his car. Sure, there is more to the story, but the point is made. Bottom line, a good SAT score is simply that ... a good SAT score. Colleges understand that there is more to life than the almighty 2400.

I can't believe this person got accepted as well. A very good friend of mine with excellent extracurriculars that show passion as well as a strong schedule and top 5%, not to mention a commended merit scholar (He was one point short of the state cut-off) was initially rejected. Our GC called and asked for a review though and he gets accepted. But it's ridiculous, only 16 students from my high school got accepted ED and 4 deferred. Out of the 50 from my school that applied, more than half are more qualified than this student. The 5% loophole is tricky though, I know about 10 of the 20 kids in the senior kids aren't applying till regular decision. Admissions are odd; I'm actually wondering if I should still consider UF my safety school next year.

I have friends that did get accepted with similar stats who are not URMs...don't see how many can jump to that conclusion.

They had different things working for them, and some were out-of-state, some had higher scores, some lower grades. My in-state friends were all over the place with respect to scores, but were generally in the top 10% at least.

florida, texas, and california (the first states that come to mind) do NOT, i repeat... DO NOT, practice affirmative action with their public schools... so his URM status WAS NOT a factor.... from what i've heard UF uses a 60-30-10 model, for grades,ec,and sat... so yeah...

my $0.02

So what is being angry and bitter really going to accomplish? Is U of F going to reverse their decision? My feeling is no so it's best not to worry and to move on with your life. Some things are out of our hands.

A friend's D got accepted to U of F a few years ago - stats were 1100/1600, no AP courses, top 25% of class.

Caucasian.

Maybe she wrote a killer essay or maybe the person who reviewed her application found something that stuck out.

Being bitter over another's acceptance will not get one anywhere. Move on.
