I recently made the decision that I would spend my first two years of college at home and save some money. I will be attending a local university, but they offer associate's degrees and I plan to pursue that and transfer later. I'm using these two years as a second chance due to my lackluster HS performance (3.3 GPA, 26 ACT). I originally thought that if I did decent I would just transfer to my flagship university (UGA) and continue. However, after reading various forums on community college, I realized that for community college students who work hard and get involved, the sky can be the limit in terms of transfer admissions. So, my question is, do I need to know right now where I might like to transfer so that I am not taking the wrong classes the first two years? Do I need to know my intended major right off the bat, or will pursuing an Associate of Arts be sufficient for any major? How did you decide where you would apply after two years? Anyone who is knowledgeable on the subject is welcome to reply.

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi, I transferred to UGA, so I might be able to provide some insight. I had similar marks to yours out of high school (3.0 GPA and 31 ACT), and I knew there was no way I was getting into UGA or GT. Luckily for me, GSU’s current president is stupid and is actually making the school LESS competitive, so I got in.

ANYWAY,

My first semester, I thought I wanted to transfer to GT and study Mech. Eng. , but I decided I hate physics, and don’t want to put up with GT’s BS, so I chose Computer Science at UGA. Their only transfer requirements are C or higher in English 1101 & 1102, and at least a 3.2 GPA (2.8 for those with over 60 credit hours of coursework). Needless to say, it’s easy to transfer to UGA.

I decided on UGA because my parents are not going to pay for out of state tuition, and UGA can offer you pretty much anything you’re looking for, even an unaccredited program in Mechanical Engineering. haha.

You need to have an idea where you want to go, because transfer requirements are different for every school. If you want to go to Georgia Tech, you’ll need to have finished a boatload of required courses BEFORE you apply. If you want to go to UGA, you’ll need to first be admitted into the university, but THEN be accepted into your desired college. If GSU is your thing, just have above the min. GPA and you’re in.

Okay, so transferring within the University System of Georgia are fairly straightforward… So have you integrated pretty well at UGA as a transfer?

Yes, very well. The amount of school spirit and student involvement is so much more than my previous school. I didn’t realize how big a difference that would make in my happiness.

The only gripe I have is UGA’s curriculum is much different than GSU’s or GT’s for Computer Science, and many other majors. This means I have to take a lot of weird humanity classes that don’t pertain to my field at all. I think it’s a waste of time and money.

Other than that, I am extremely happy here, and am very happy I transferred.
