How did you develop a relationship with your guidance counselor?

My guidance counselor has over 100 students assigned to her in my grade alone, and I want to make sure I make an effort to get to know her. I've only met with her a few times. One of those times was when I switched teachers for a course, and I think I made a good impression. We got along well and she told my parents that I was mature and what not. That being said, I was just wondering how exactly I would errr nurture a relationship with her? Any advice? Thanks :)

Mine has >100. I just go to her once a month, ask questions I sincerely have (they don’t want you going there for sake of being there), and I email her. She seems truly happy that I’ve made an effort to communicate with her.

Seconding what addymithas said. If you have any questions you’d like to bring up, write them down and go to her. It seems like she already has a good impression of you, so don’t screw it up. ;)

Ahah thanks guys  it’s gonna be a struggle not to screw it up… jk

In my opinion, it’s not something you should try to force and make… happen. If you’re sincere with your questions and conversations and just make it a natural thing, it will work out. It shouldn’t even be something that you try… to do, but something that just happens. You certainly sound like someone who has their sights set high for themselves, so be yourself and that will show.

There are 10 counselors at my school, for a population of 3300.
There used to be 12, until two were laid off.
My counselor was laid off after my sophomore year, and I was assigned a new one.
Luckily for me, she’s nice and friendly, but I really only see her once a year.
Still, I feel that we have an okay relationship.
When your counselor is dealing with a lot of students, it may feel like you’re easily forgotten, but I’ve found just being yourself is enough to stand out from the crowd.
That being said, if you have a poor counselor, you’re in trouble.

@blueribbon thanks! She knows my name which actually makes me feel great, considering most kids have never talked to her. She stops my in the hallways occasionally to see how my new class is going, so I guess I’m on the right track! Thanks everyone!
