Are you friends with your counselor? If you are, what would you suggest to the people who aren't friends with their counselor, but want to befriend them?

Yes I am!
If you are not friends with him/her then try to begin by casually asking them how their day went and just make sure to start a small conversation with them.

It’s not that hard. People can be best friends with them after a while…they are your mentors ;-)

Lol I didn’t search out my counselor. She searched me out because of my academic/standardized scores (not great, but at least better then my school’s). Then me and her grew fond of each other.

She gives me VIP access over all her 100 or so students.

I’m definitely friends with my counselor. It’s good to know that I don’t have to do much more for my counselor to write a detailed recommendation about me.

Yeah, I often chill in his office when I don’t feel like going to class

Not with my counselor, who has never been the same person for more than a year (ugh), but with the magnet coordinator. She was kind of stuck with me, and then I grew on her, haha.

Dittoing Desi on just making small talk, especially if you’re in their office asking for something.

I got to know my counselor pretty well last year, but she’s moving so I’ll be getting a new one. I’m going to miss her! & yeah, I agree with the above advice. ^ Just make an effort to make small talk, but be genuine. Ask for their advice when you need it.

I know counselor recs are part of the college application process, but what do you do in a school where counselors are not proactive? Do you just randomly go into his/her office just to talk? That seems to be a little awkward…

^My issue also. Counselors barely, if ever, leave their rooms at my school.

I got a new counselor this year, but I visit her with a lot with questions and I always tell her to have a great day. Not much more I can do…

can anybody help with CantConcentrate’s and my situation?

I just became friends with my counselor last year when I was going through a lot of stuff, and we’re relatively close now. He doesn’t always fix my academic-related problems but he’s easy to talk to.

CantConcentrate and hpyscm@ You just have to go to them. My school’s that way, too. Go in with some sort of purpose, like getting a transcript printout or asking a burning question. You can use a pretty dumb excuse, but the point is to get them talking without wierding them out.
