Hi.. i was wondering where everyone at Harvard Med went to college. I'm currently unhappy with my choices for undergraduate school ad want to make sure they won't hinder my efforts to get into my top choices for Med school
so please simply include the name of the college you attended for undergrad
and if you want to be really awesome... some of the ECs you did :D THANKS!

It’s too soon for you to be thinking about where to go to medical school. Your undergrad will also not hinder your chances, assuming you’re looking at the same type of schools everybody else is.

Every high school student planning to go pre-med thinks of HMS as the holy grail or something. I’m sure it’s a great medical school, but there are many things to consider when deciding where to apply for medical school, “name brand” usually not being at the top of the list.

There’s also no magic formula, don’t go through college and look at it as nothing but a stepping stone to medical school; a place where you have to do “this, this, and that” and get “X volunteering hours” and be in “Y amount of clubs”.

oh joy. a sermon. im looking for solid information here-but thanks for the advice.

Why don’t you just go on facebook and search for the Harvard Med groups to get an idea of the kinds of undergrad colleges that feed into HMS? I don’t think there’s anyone on here that goes to that med school.

its a private group… its not letting me see everyone’s profile. thanks though! it was a clever approach.

What are you talking about? Search “Harvard Medical School 2012” for example and you can see everyone’s undergrads. You don’t actually need to enter the profiles to see where they went to college. I personally think this is all a waste a time but you asked for it. You can see that Georgia State is represented all the way up to Harvard University, with most people coming from prestigous colleges, not surprisingly. I’m not sure what this exercise is supposed to prove.

Or you can just go on Mdapplicants.com and search for people who got into Harvard Med.

Okay, you want solid information? I’m pretty sure none of the med students/docs on CC went to HMS (as far as I know), but here’s some solid info:

Get a high GPA.
Get a high MCAT.
Get clinical experience of some sort.
Do research.
Do some EC that makes you stand out.
Get lucky.

Do you want to be a doctor or a graduate of Harvard Medical School? Get your priorities in line. If it’s to say “I graduated from Harvard Medical School” then I hope you’re only planning on applying there and no where else, so you don’t take a spot away from someone who really cares more about their profession than being able to brag about where their degree came from.

oh lol- i’m using harvard as a symbol for the top med schools… not JUST harvard.

“Top Med School” is variable depending on what you want to do.

High schoolers throw around the phrase “top medical schools” without knowing what it means (or if it means anything at all).

I have 10 + relatives that are doctors now and many more that are in medical school or on their way.

Gold Shadow, Son of Opie, Bigredmed, you can be in denial just because you might not have gone to a med school as prestigious as Harvard, but the fact of the matter is some medical schools are better known and give you more opportunities and better facilities. It’s unfortunate, but it’s just true.

The biggest difference between getting into a top med school like JH or Harvard is how much you stand out. The high GPA, MCAT, good Letters of recommendation, all that is necessary. Your best opportunity, however, is through research. If you have an outstanding research project or just anything that makes your application special will really be the key.

Getting into medical school, regardless of which you get into, is a huge achievement. They are so competitive these days.

Some medical schools are indeed better known and have better facilities. They also give you more opportunities.

However, those opportunities are mostly in relatively obscure fields: non-medical fields, very specific residencies (e.g. plastics), and research careers.

If you don’t want those opportunities, then there’s no reason to bother with a top-ranked medical school.

^^ 41

pls, whats sooo special about harvard med

the combination of letters that comes before the words school of medicine. HMS is great, but it is not perfect nor is it superior in every way. Medical school is rough, go somewhere where you are going to be happy. If HMS is what will make you happy and you can get in, go for it.

harvard rocks… and work hard

So much research. :(

Doctors are doctors. If you are looking to practice in the clinical world, it doesn’t really matter where you go. Because everyone ends up with a provate practice or working in a hospital in the end. If you are looking to do benchwork, then your med school is a little more important
