How did you memorize your SAT words?

TO PEOPLE WHO ARE TELLING PEOPLE TO READ:

Unless you read alot your whole life, reading alot one year isnt going to help
i suggest getting familiar (not memorize word for word) with definitions THEN reading alot for a year b.c most of the time you kind of skim over the hard words when you read (not look them up) but after you get familiar with them and you encoutner them, you realize you see them alot more often

have memorized 1000+ vocabs but still couldn’t score good in the practice test. It is just around 1600 out of 2400. What should I do to boost up my score? Really, in confusion???

Should i even bother studying vocab? I’m averaging one wrong per section on CR sentence completion questions.

Bigb I don’t think it’ll do you much good
I’ve memorized sparknotes 1000 and I still get 2 wrong..
the chances of a sparknotes word appearing is great but.. these are the medium-hard words. the really hard ones are curveballs that chances are wont be on the vocab lists anyways

edit–
what you can do is look at a prep book that sections vocab by difficulty (I think barrons does this?) and memorize the hard ones. it shouldnt be too many and it won’t hurt…

thanks snowflakes for the great advice!

in junior high i was pretty much a suck up and after i’d write my essays, i’d go back and “thesauresize” every single word so that it sounded fancy.

needless to say, i ended up getting horrible marks, but the silver lining is that THAT was how i learned a LOT of the vocabulary that i know right now!

Years of reading.

Looking through the words again and again. Putting them in context.

I didn’t. We use vocab books through all years of HS English here, and they really help. I got a 710, ha.

As said above, reading is the best way to prepare for the SAT. Even though some people dont have reading habits it helps you in various points. It helps you expend your vocabulary, your knowledge about random topics, and most of all it helps you have reading comprehension. Though flash cards is also a good help if you are a visual person.

How do i memorize my words ? I have a special vocabulary book which pages are separated into two fields.I write the English word in the left field, and the translation into Bulgarian in the right field. While writing,i am memorize the words. Each they i learn about 100 words and then before going to sleep i read them over and over again and when i wake up i read them again.THis is enough for me.

i talk about the words with my ex boyfriend. he’s really funny and the way he defines them helps me remember them in a catchy way. then i look them over and sometimes i use flashcards. i dont do all the words, just ones i find on practice tests or on the sat and the most common and hot prospects from barron’s sat book 09.

-Used the Gruber 5000 word list
-Circled all the words I didn’t know
Went through page by page… read each definition, covered it, recited it by memory, moved to next word
-Rinse and repeat until you can recite the definition of each circled word at the drop of the hat

I memorized about 1200 words this way and got 800s on the writing and critical reading parts of the SAT

wow that’s amazing! :)

I also find that writing the word and then the definition helps me memorize the words better so when I am working with my vocabualary books or lists I circle the words I don’t know and then I make a list or do flashcards.

My teacher also told me to make sure I knew all the vocabulary words on the practice tests not just the right answers. Many of the wrong answers especially the hard ones show up as the right answer on other SATs.

I also go through the old posts on CC that list the words that showed up on the SAT and PSAT which help me see words I might have missed. The posts in October and November have been very helpful.

make flashcards and do funky exercises with the words (more than just writing the definition)

But it’s too hard and impossible to many people, isn’t it ?(start prepping ten years before the test)
Is there anybody know how to memorize all the words in just one month?

flashcards definitely
