How different are Haverford and Swarthmore?

Hahaha I love the title of this thread. Amherst & Williams, Swarthmore & Haverford -- some schools you always hear in the same breath.

Definately go to Swarthmore if you got in. It has SUCH a better reputation for Grad schools, and the diploma alone will get you jobs etc. The campus is much more beautiful, while the area around haverford is a little slummy. Plus, haverford is SO SMALL it's crazy. Swarthmore has more kids, and has a much better "feel" to it.

Interesting tht Kgordon was waitlisted at Haverford...

no wonder why kgordon is waitlisted from Haverford. Haverford i think doesnt take students who are so obssesed with reputations, competitions and grades.....n this is the most attractive feature of haverford. it is noncompetetive competetive college, if that make any sense -video catalog.

haha kgordon, quit while you're ahead. you're not going to be respected in the haverford forums if you continue to insult the school that obviously means so much to its students.

Kevin (Kgordon) is insulting Haverford to scare away acceptees to free up space so he can get off the waitlist. It's a pretty sleazy way to go.

I don't think Kevin will fit in, even if he manages to get off the waitlist.

My daughter is going to Bryn Mawr and
has a few questions relative to the social life
in the two schools.

Which of the two colleges have the best parties.

On a ranking of 1 to 10 with 10 the highest
what school has the most handsome guys &
what school has the prettiest girls?

between haverford and swarthmore? isn't attractiveness subjective =P

Universally, beauty is in the eye of the beholder
& it is human nature to be attracted to objects
of beauty..... therefore, in the eye of the individual
beholder beauty is objective

i think BMC girls hang out with Haverford guys more... that's the impression I received. At Haverford, there were jokes about Swarthmore guys being not so attractive but I know that's just on account of the rivalry. It might just be that there's a closer relationship between Bryn Mawr and Haverford to start with.

my uncle went to haverford and aunt and other uncle to swarthmore. all are california university professors and very brainy and you should hear their tweedy meta-physical jabbering over special family holiday dinners... drives my business oriented parents nuts. my aunt and uncles are very cool people and that's why these schools somewhat appeal to me despite their size. :)

too much has been written on this subject but the only thing worth adding to this debate, which is an original thought in my modest opinion, has to do with an impression i get from reading these swat/haverford comparison posts- i think there are 10-12 between both college threads that ive been reading for the last few days. it seems that some people think highly of both schools but swarthmore maybe a little more so (this guy "interested dad" for example... i think he's the swat admissions director in secret). :) factors are cited such as endowmwnt size, greater selectivity, more resources, stronger work ethic and better reputation. as evidence, % grads with phds are cited (search "PHD production" and all of these figures will come up showing swarthmore usually, but not always ahead of haverford, but most of the time they are really close and in the top 10 and separated by only 2-3 rungs)... also, they are usually both way ahead of williams and amherst in this measure as well which is surprising

so the conclusion is swarthmore is better than haverford, right?

but i think a more interesting question to ask is that, "despite swarthmore's huge $ endowment size, more selective (?) applicants, and reputation for hardercore academic and prestige, why is haveford able to produce at similar rates? what does haverford... have... that makes up the difference? i'm not sure if i believe haverford's 99% acceptance to med school, but if that's true, that's pretty amazing as well

this is just my thought. beyond this, i think this issue has been beatened to death. hopefully my post will end this futile debate. go to which ever school makes you happiest... for me it's big city big school... as you can tell, i think highly of both these schools and that's why i'm spending my time on this site.
