hi im a high school sophomore who is planning on taking General Chemistry 1A and 1B this summer at UC Irvine. is the course generally too difficult? i don't want to get myself into something that i can't get out of (that is, get less than an A and thus ruin my GPA if i later go to a UC haha :P)

my stats: 2240 SAT/4.0 UW GPA/4.67 W GPA/8 APs/Good at math and sciences (except for physics)

If you’ve taken Chemistry in high school before, you should be fine. Don’t expect a walk in the park! Performance on the AP Chemistry is a poor indicator of success. It’s definitely doable though.

Chem 1A is one of the easiest classes ever taken, RETROSPECTIVELY. Dont slack off with the class, cause it does gets boring when I took it. Its mostly concecpt.

Chem 1B is purely calculations. Like knowing the Gas Laws, and Thermodynamics, and such. Just need to practice problems in the book to do well and same goes well with Chem 1A.

I did not take Chem1A but I did take Chem1B. It was easy to me, but now I’m struggling with 1C. I’ve heard about 1A nightmares so I guess in terms of difficulty, it should rank something like 1C>1A>1B? TA’s are going to be the most important people in your Gen. Chem experience. A good TA can really help you enjoy learning the material.

I don’t think Arasasingham’s good… ;_; Give me Potmaaaa.

Anyway, yeah, G-Chem is a cakewalk. I thought it was even easier than my high school Chemistry class. =_= Doing the textbook practice problems and always attending discussion are the two keys to success. All the stuff is really straightforward - no clever things or stupid little tricks to memorize like you have to do for math classes.

Apparently Shaka is chill as hell…i can’t find anything on Oschkinat though, he doesnt even seem to be a professor at UC Irvine…visiting prof maybe?

I had shaka over summer for 1C. not easy and almost too smart for his own good but he tries to make it manageable. 1B is the hardest of gchem in my opinion though. And keep in mind the summer courses go much faster than the usual courses since they are half sessions. Also you will have lab for 1b (not for 1A) and that actually makes a huge difference, at least during the regular year, because it takes up a lot of time. Idk if I would do it at a HS soph, but if you are a math/science person more power to ya!
