I am a senior who absolutely LOVES Tufts and will most likely be applying ED there. My only concern is that I really want to attend a top law school after receiving my bachelors but am afraid that Tufts will be so difficult that I will get a low GPA and ruin my chances of that. I have heard horror stories about impossible classes, grade deflation, and insanely stressful college experiences, but all of those have been from people studying Engineering/PreMed/another science like bio or chem. Since I will be majoring in something in the soft science/humanities field (possibly econ or history), I don't feel as though these stories will apply to me. That is why I'm turning to CC for help. Is Tufts unreasonably difficult (compared to other top schools) in these fields? Will I be able to work hard and get around a 3.7 gpa or slightly higher without being absolutely miserable or socially deprived? I know getting A's isn't the only part of college and I really want to learn and be social and have a happy time, but getting into a good law school is important to me.
Thank you so much

My son is a junior and premed. I don’t think there’s any grade deflation at Tufts. The science classes are tough but fair. All the non science he’s taken have been easy for him. They required work but were all relatively easy As. The atmosphere is very collaborative not cut throat. He works hard but has plenty of time for social life and partying.

Tough but fair is a good description. Part of your success will depend on the quality of your preparation and your time management skills. Two DDs - one graduated and one junior. Both came in very prepared and both have/had a GPA above 3.7, active social lives and many EC activities.

If you love Tufts, that’s where you should apply (and attend, if accepted). Don’t buy into the grade deflation, “it’s so hard” stuff. If you’re a good student, and balance your courses, you’ll do just fine. Moreover, law schools understand the differences between between different schools and different majors (i.e., a 3.7 in a drama or classics major is not the same as a 3.7 in a physics or math major, and Podunk U is not the same as Tufts).
Good luck!
