How difficult is it to get into USC as an undergrad; accounting major?

Currently, I'm attending a CC in California and my GPA is about 2.81. I figure if I take care of a couple lower grades I received and finish out my remaining semesters well, I should be able to achieve a 3.5+ GPA. Assuming I complete the required lower-division courses and finish with a GPA around 3.5, what would my chances be of getting accepted as a transfer to USC for their accounting program (monetary issues aside)? I don't participate in any extracurricular activities or anything like that, which I hear USC looks considerably at, so I know that would hurt.

Right now I'm leaning towards transferring to CSUF, but I'd still like to know how realistic an option USC would be.

Slim to none. Transfer admissions are really cut-throat at highly ranked schools.

I don’t really see how you can “take care of some classes” and finish out doing well. From where you are now to where you want to be, that will be a virtual 180. If you seriously can’t get a 3.5 at a community college from the get go, forget USC and good luck with CSUF.

I appreciate the response and the honesty. I know my GPA isn’t great; especially for a CC. I’ve only recently really started to take my school work seriously (boy do I wish I had been this motivated starting at HS), so I know I’ve got some catching up to do.

well, you can’t change the past. usc is actually pretty easy to get into as a transfer, but you would really need to pull up your CC GPA to a 3.5+. given your academic history, are you really prepared to step up and do that?

i agree with binks that you are probably better off looking at csuf. obviously it can’t hurt to apply to usc, but i wouldn’t count on an admission. seeing as how the leventhal accounting program has been consistently ranked in the top 5 in the nation, i’m not sure it would be a realistic program for you even if you were to get accepted into usc. accounting is a lot harder for transfers to do well in than students who start out at usc.

twinkie, thanks for the reply.

I believe that I could possibly get my current GPA of 2.81 to a 3.5+ if I retake a couple of courses that I did poorly in (and my grade reflects that obviously). You say that USC is actually pretty easy to get into as a transfer… does that apply to someone such as me who has literally been involved in zero extracurricular activities? If so, and a 3.5+ GPA and the completed lower-division courses is all that I really need, I might have to reconsider USC, even if accounting is tougher for transfer students.

Thx for any advice.

You won’t make it. You’d need a couple semesters of 4.0 to bump that up. Your current GPA doesn’t indicate you have the ability to do that either.

If I were at looking at me I probably wouldn’t think I could do it either. But I really do feel like I could get it done if I work hard enough. I don’t know if I already mentioned it, but I probably have three semesters left before I’ll be able to transfer. And JFTR, I’ve been attending this CC since fall 08. I started out very unmotivated and just to give you an idea, I completed only TWO courses in my first two semesters. Yes, two. Again, I really do feel like I could bring it up to a 3.5+. If not, at the very least I will have tried hard doing so.

So again, suppose I were to get it up to a 3.5+, would that be all I really need (because I did figure it would be more than that)? Or would my lack of ECs ultimately doom me? Thx.

Wow people on here can be such negative *****es.

evam is so unrealistic. Having fun bumping an old thread up? I bet you are in this position you worthless slacker. You will fail.

“usc is actually pretty easy to get into as a transfer, but you would really need to pull up your CC GPA to a 3.5+” is this true if i wanted to transfer from uci to usc? and what more would i need to be competitive?
