I'm a rising Senior, so 9th grade was a while ago.

In Freshman Year, I didn't take any honors classes(incl. wind ens.) and I got As in all of them. Then, in Sophomore year, I took 4 honors classes, 1 AP class, and Band. I also got all As that year. Then, I got As in all of my classes in junior year with a schedule that's mostly made up of AP classes.

Will colleges over look the regular classes I took in 9th grade?

Will they still consider my schedule rigorous?

No. Don't worry about it. I didn't take any Honors classes my Freshman year and I'm fine. Then again, my school didn't offer them for Freshmen, but I did get really bad grades (like, a lot of B's and a C). But I got straight A's later and still got into NYU and Northwestern. I know those schools aren't Harvard (which I assume is what you're going for considering your name) but Harvard is a crap shoot even for the flawless student. You need to make yourself stand out to get yourself into Harvard, which is where the essay comes in. So stop being anal retentive about the classes you took a million years ago and start rough drafting your essay now.

I'm trying to start my essays. I already have some possible topics: passion to help the community, passion for music, and other possible topics.

I have AP Lit homework and I'm studying for the ACT. Because of those activites, I've only been brainstorming topics. Also, I'm trying to come up with essays for the UCs, besides the common app. essays.

I'm applying to NYU and Northwestern, too. Hopefully, I'll get into them.
I only need to improve my test scores. I need to score high on the ACT or re-take the SAT(1640).

I'm trying to join a county-wide newspaper and I've been accepted to a county young assembly program. I have a lot more activities that I'm involved with, so hopefully, I do well on the ACT, subject tests, and essays for the colleges.

At least, I'm done with the SAT US History subject test. I got a 720 in May for it.

nhsharvrd-
1640/2400? Yes, you will need to improve on that to be a viable candidate for NYU or Northwestern. Unless you have some significant hook, you definitely shuld retake.

1640?
Im pretty sure that wont get you into Northwestern or NYU....not even looking at your grades. If you want to get into those schools try at least a 1950+.

And definitely retake the SAT, although I wouldn't say you're completely out of the running at schools like NYU and Northwestern. I got an 1860 on the SAT and I got into both, so whoever said you need at least a 1950 is full of crap.

happyandyappy- he needs a 1950ish because of this other grades and such. 1860 is barely cutting it according to the average SAT scores for both schools.

alot of schools do not count freshman year grades like the UC's, U of Michigan, Princeton etc etc. However, colleges also know that freshman year is the transition year and alot of studnets struggle and as long as you had rising grades and have very good test scores, you should be okay.

Then again, it matters what your school offers. I don't have any honors classes because my school didn't offer any. But if you're worrying about 9th grade when you got straight A's anyway, please seek mental assistance, and learn that there's more to life.

It isn't your 9th grade schedule you ought to be worrying about; with a 1640 you've got no chance at Harvard, almost no chance at Northwestern, and very little chance at NYU.

I've seen 1900 becoming 2100-2200s with studying, but I've never seen a 1600 become a 2000. Someone said it was crap that you need at least a 1950 to get into a private elite like Northwestern; just because your application worked out for you, it doesn't mean your score's the cut-off for the average applicant. Yes, people have gotten into Stanford with a 1860, I know a few actually, but they are, by no means, normal. They are literally "outstanding" kids in different ways.

Honestly, you can't be just an A student with a few dozen awards from the community to make up for a mediocre score like an 1860 to get into a top 15 private elite. It's no pushover.

Lejeune is right! The average at NU is about a 2300 I believe. Like many schools these days, NU is looking for "well-rounded" students. In other words, they're looking for kids that shine on many fields. You are EXTREMELY lucky to get in with a 1640.
