How do colleges account for different highschools calculating gpas differently?

They either recalculate your GPA using their scale or look at you in the context of your peers, depending on the school. An A is still an A regardless of the school.

How they do it is irrelevant. The fact is they do it. It’s their job to evaluate applicants regardless of the 500 differing HS marking systems extant. Whatever you have, they’ve seen it. Relax.

Possible methods:

Recalculate GPA based on their own methods.

Use class rank instead.

Holistically look at the courses and grades, ignoring the high school’s GPA calculation.
