Junior S just took practice SAT and math score was nearly 200 points higher than CR/W. Sophmore PSAT was similar. Will adcoms at selective schools forgive average reading/writing scores for math majors if math scores are nearly perfect?

So, math was high 700s and reading and writing were high 500s-low 600s, giving a total just over 2000? It's certainly a decent score, though the very top colleges probably won't be overly impressed, as they get as many kids who score well on all sections as they need, and then some. Not all schools even look at the writing score, so if they look at the combined CR/M, your son has around a 1400, which is quite respectable. I don't think you should assume it will automatically remove him from consideration. For example, I just looked up the freshman profile on the Cornell admissions site, and 1/3 of students had a CR< 650. I think he'd still be seriously considered, even at selective schools. Fortunately, scores are not everything, and your son has probably got other accomplishments in his record that would make him an attractive applicant. He might also want to try the ACT (as I'm sure you've seen other posters on other threads suggest). It does have a different focus, and he may find that it suits him better.
