For example, for a master's thesis research course that says you can earn 1 to 6 credits. How does that work? Also does it cost the same no matter how credits you earn?

Thank you

You and your adviser estimate how much time you will be working on your research so that you sign up for the appropriate number of credits in a research “course”. Tuition policies vary on whether the number of credits matters (though if you are a PhD student, your tuition is typically waived or otherwise covered).

For other courses, variable unit courses may be self-paced courses, or they may be special topics courses where the credit value is set for each section (with its own special topic) but may be different for some other section (with a different special topic).

I am a freshman considering a dual degree program(BS and MS at the same time). Do you now how that works out financially? Or does that differ at each school?

It is school-specific.
