In the Vanderbilt area? I usually spend ~15 hours out of any given school week on the trail, so I would I be able to legitimately maintain my hobby if I attended Vanderbilt? How would you classify the local hikes? What sort of terrain do they go through? Is there a large variety of hikes within an hour's drive?

Sounds kinda lame to actually GO with a group coordinated like this, lolol, but it shows that there actually are hiking places around there :]

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO USE GOOGLE?!?!?!?
[Places to Go: Outdoor Recreation Program | Vanderbilt University](http://www.vanderbilt.edu/outrec/own/places.html)
lolololol :]

I saw the first link, but shook my head in disgust and closed the tab upon glimpsing “prices” – ***?!

The second one looks interesting, but alas, no pictures immediately viewable…

And you should have run it through the “let me google that for you” search engine. The effect would have been more poignant ;p

It’s the South, you can easily do whatever you want outdoors. The Smokies are a short drive (relative) away with plenty of great trails. Tons of nice fly fishing spots nearby, you can sail at Piercy Priest, short drive to some good class rapids, etc…
If you end up being just completely lost once you get here, either go talk to those Outdoor Recreation people or do the even smarter thing and talk to the locals at Cumberland Transit, the closest small outdoor store (West End near Apple Mart).

Lol, doomster, the prices were silly, yeah, but my point with that link was that there are places to go.
And that search engine always comes across as really rude, imo (which I apparently already do on CC, so ***, lol) so I don’t ever use it… plus I didn’t find my link through google, I was just kinda wondering why YOU didn’t just google it. :]

Since freshmen can’t have cars it may not matter if the trails are 15 minutes away or 3-4 hours away.
The closest hilly hiking trail to Vanderbilt is at Radnor Lake. There are 3 separate walking/hiking trail but no bouldering. It’s a beautiful area that is either a state or at least a city park. It is between 15-20 minutes from Vanderbilt depending on traffic and lights. The length of the trails are between 2.5 -4 miles long. I bet you can find some more info and perhaps photos online.
If you are able to find an upperclassman with a car, this won’t be a problem for you.

No no IV, when I said that “I saw the first link,” I meant that I had already seen the first link *from prior googling adventures/I. And “DO YOU KNOW HOW TO USE GOOGLE?!?!?!?,” way more genteel! ;p

Thanks everyone else for the helpful replies! :]

Doomster I hate you a lot. This totally and completely cancels out any of my previous exclamations of love for you :]

Btw, maybe you should try pluperfect to clue us in to when in the past you did something (like, hm… seeing the first page as opposed to seeing the second ;]) instead of going into the confusing statements of “I saw the first page” and “The second one looks interesting” (which makes no sense, were you actually looking at the page as you were typing? improbable, I think). Maaaybe? :]

I hope there’s backpacking because I absolute love doing it

Backpack around campus. DO IT!

lmao yeah pack my little tent and sleeping bag and tin can alcohol stove and cook my dehydrated food outside of branscomb. I would be the cool kid :)

I’ll totally join you!

(if tomorrow works out!)

haha I hope for you that it does!
and not just for the sake of my backpacking trip lol

Seriously. How cool/funny would it be to camp out on any campus? People would walk by and be like “lolwut?” Haha.

It’s like a mini version of improv everywhere.

haha have all the hiking gear on and everything too

Well, only one way to find out how funny it will be.

haha I’m scared at the same time what might happen to my tent in the middle of the night

…and then there are always the sprinklers! ^_^

lol knowing my luck I would accidentally set it up right on top of the sprinkler head
