We were headed to Atlanta for a Summer Program at another college and decided to drive through Sewanee. Our usually hard to impress S's reaction was something akin to "I won't lie - this is one impressive school." He typically has wanted a school in a urban setting, but was so in awe of Sewanee's campus, he has asked us to set up a tour. S is not the party type, he does make friends and loves participating in the drama productions at HS, but he is not an outdoorsy type person. He is concerned that the nearest decent city is 1 hour away. (M'boro and Chatt). If he goes there, he will probably do the part Sewanee part Vandy for Math Education degree.

So what do students do when not in class.

We are from the DC area and visited Sewanee a few weeks ago. My rising senior twins also loved the campus and want to apply. Indeed, my son liked Sewanee better than Vanderbilt, while my daughter liked them both. This is a bit of an undiscovered jewel for Northerners. Any ways, you are right that there is not much to do near Sewanee, although it appears that there are frequent activities on campus. Plus, I assume if your son is in the dual math program with Vandy, he will spend time in Nashville. Also, I understand many Sewanee students study abroad and so there are opportunities to get away from campus. Did you get a moon pie while you were there?

Grew up with Moon Pies - if you ever get the chance put it in the microwave for 15 sec. Just enough to melt the marshmallow. YUM.

To answer your question simply and straight-forwardly, Sewanee students enjoy each other’s company when not in class. When I leave my class I grab a beer and talk about my class with my peers. The classroom is not defined to four walls; instead the classroom is 13,000 acres.

It is very rare to find students not hanging out at the dining hall, at a fraternity or sorority house, or a sports event. The campus is dominated by the integration of the community and the student body which is very special. Where else can a undergraduate enjoy a football game but also discuss Shakespeare with a professor while sharing a beer and talking about the events for the night? But seriously, this campus is special and so very inviting to all those that decide to make it a part of their lives. It is much more than a college - you are enrolled for life. (while this is not an academic post I could continue on about how more true the academic vision is at Sewanee compared to its competitors and SEC neighbors).
