So I really want to go to Yale but I’m not extraordinary at anything even though I’m “pretty good” at everything, like your average asian (which sucks because I’m actually Asian, and I’ve heard that colleges don’t like the overachieving asian type, even though I’m not really since my parents aren’t pushy and i actually enjoy the things I do, although my accomplishments seem very stereotypically asian) adj;lfa so I have a GPA (weighted) of 4.5 (4.8 possible, but not really because our school has mandatory non honors courses and APs are the same as honors) I’m taking AP Calc BC AP Physics C AP Euro and AP Chem as a sophomore, but I really don’t have any major achievements, eugh helpp? I enjoy debate and MUN but I’m not good enough for colleges to care, and I really enjoy dance, but again, I only started very recently so I’m not that great at it either. Another thing that sucks is the ppl competing with me at my school (one kid is a Harvard legacy, skipped 8th grade, in all of my classes, 4.7 gpa. Another kid is the national swimming 2nd place and STEM legend and also an impressive GPA {in between mine and the kid mentioned earlier}, etc)
Should I also mention that I’m not american :PPPP I go to an American school in Southeast Asia
Sorry this is like ranting out my frustration but please help
International students have a steeper path to climb of an already steep hill, so set your expectations and plan accordingly. If you are a US citizen, you would count as a domestic student. You can only do the best that you can do in school and testing. Have great relationships with your teachers so that at least 2 of them can write great personalized recommendations. Participate meaningfully in EC’s you truly enjoy and where you can point to substantive accomplishments. If you want to attend a US school, make sure you apply to matches and safeties that your family can afford as well as major reach schools like Yale.
You’re not competing with your classmates.
There will be candidates from all over the world and it may hard to even imagine what backgrounds they bring.
Your best bet is to show the best possible you and let the school decide if they think you’re a fit.
