how do I get selected for leadership positions in an American college?

In my country/school, almost all ECs select their leaders through elections, or a combination of interview + elections. I'll be coming to an American college next year and I'm wondering if it's done any differently over here.

I used to think that the selection process is also the same in college (elections), but my friend at Stanford tells me that there're many ECs that choose leaders purely through an application + interview process that's administered by the outgoing leaders - no election. Is that true?

Could you guys give me a a very rough idea of how many % of ECs are by elections, interviews etc?

Thanks :)

Typically, at the very top universities – places like HPYS – students select their own leaders via election and/or an application process.

At less competitive universities, depending on the activity, faculty advisors may select the leaders, but for offices such as student government offices, those are selected through elections by students.

It’s pretty self selecting to ask for a leadership position because of the responsiblity leadership entails so I wouldn’t stress so much over beating out so many people. But yes, in general, the club holds an election for new leaders.
