No Positions, No Acceptance?

If I don't have any leadership positions, will that really hurt me in college applications? I do devote a considerable amount of time to ECs and I do try to go for positions. However, I lose every time because I am not well-known. I really do want to hold a position to prove that I am committed to the clubs I am in. Most people seem to imply that colleges assume that anyone can be a member of a club and do nothing, but that is not the case. Does anyone have an idea of how I can actually do something for the clubs I am in? I really do want to hold a leadership position because I always have ideas for clubs. Nowadays, club elections have become popularity contests and I am not popular by any means. I really need to find a solution to this problem. Thanks!

I know how you feel gurl! see my thread on a similar topic to this:

I think colleges can understand that not everyone is a leader. If you can somehow portray that you are still an active member, I'm sure it will be fine.

Thanks for replying.
@LilBabySeaOtter: Wow, I was surprised by the number of people who agree with me
@princessbell: you have definitely reassured me, thanks!

Most colleges at most care about ECs for merit aid, not admission.
It's only the very top colleges --places like HPYS - that strongly consider ECs as part of admission. That's because they ahve such an overabundance of high stat applicants that they are able to select students based on creating a class representing all kinds of diversity including in ECs with leadership.
Something like 60% of students in the U.S. are accepted to their first choice colleges. I doubt that most college applicants have leadership experience.

^ those statistics make me cry....60%

Remember that the 60th percentile for the SAT is like a 550, that means that all those kids god accepted by the local CC...yay! That means that the rest of those 40% prob got screwed over o_O

I'm an active member on my debate team, but there's no such thing as a "captain" at my HS. Sucks for me...

That's too bad mj93, but you do have opportunities to win competitions right?

if you really want a position and cannot obtain one by elections, you can start a club very easily. it's probably too late to start it this year, but definately possible to start next year.

Remember that the 60th percentile for the SAT is like a 550, that means that all those kids god accepted by the local CC"

Ridiculous. I don't think that CCs even require SATs.
Most of the students who were in my S's IB program got into their first choice colleges, and most did not go to community colleges.

Most people in this country who go to 4-year colleges go to public colleges, and most public colleges aren't that hard to get into as is the case with most private colleges in the US. Most colleges in the US accept the majority of their applicants. It's only places like HPYS and most of the top 25 colleges that do not.
