How do I improve my chances of recieving an appointment at the Naval Aacademy?

I am a freshman at one of the top schools in my district. I am in three honors classes, and I signed up to be in 5 honors classes next year because french 3 is considered honors. I run cross country, and I am very involved in NJROTC. I just recieved the title of cadet of the year, and i am hoping i will be on staff next year. Also, i am planning on competing to go the leadership academy this summer. I just calculated my gpa, and it is a 4.25. I am thinking about starting a club for helping around the community. I am not quite sure what it will be focused on. Also, I am looking into joining class council, and then running for an office position next year. I am in French Club, and i am on almost all of the teams in NJROTC; exhibition drill, hopefully color gaurd, physical fitness, and orienteering. Regarding my physical fitness, i can run a mile in 6 minutes and 37 seconds during xc season, 67 curlups in one minute, and 50 pushups in 2 minutes. I know i need to improve pushups, but how else should i better improve my chances? I want to be a marine corpes officer.

Figure out your unweighted GPA. It should be above a 3.9. If you only do run cross country, also run track and do something in the winter as well (if it’s not a sport, then do speech or debate or some other involvement). Start preparing yourself to take leadership positions such as captain on sports teams and other groups you are in. Usually you have to be the best to lead. Otherwise talk to the coaches now about how you can prepare to or become captain–this actually works because it shows you are committed and willing to lead. Do more volunteering. Find one thing you like doing and continue doing it for the rest of high school. Read classic novels to help you become more well-rounded and give you something to write about in your essays and talk about in your interviews. Overall, just apply yourself. Do not necessarily try to be in all of these various clubs just to pad your resume–they know when you do that and they see it as insecure. Just stick with what you enjoy doing and focus on that.

One more thing. Take a practice SAT or ACT. See how you do.

do you think becoming a captain for one of the NJROTC teams would be okay? or would becoming the captain of a sport look better?

Be a captain of a sports team. The military academy looks for captains of varsity teams quite a lot. The stats for how many they enroll are quite high.

do they only look at the unweighted GPA?

so, would they look at varsity captains over if youre the commanding officer of a whole jrotc unit? and what is the likeliness of tiwns getting in?

I could see the commanding officer of the whole unit getting a decent amount of respect. But they really want leadership roles because YOU will be the future military leaders and applicants with those skills and experience will get priority. I do not think being a twin impacts it. Get high grades. Be involved. Do sports. Service. Extra curriculars. Good luck

what i mean with the twin is, whats the likeliness of BOTH of us getting in, not the fact that i am a twin. can it be sports outside of school? like soccer?

Both of us are about the same, well rounded, high grades, honors, xc, jrotc, community service, and yeh. im also starting a club with someone, do you think that will look good? and does anybody know if those sat guide books that you can get a book stores actually help improve or ready a person? im taking the psat next year.

haha we have so many questions. sorry.

On the “twin” factor, there are many twins who’ve been at USNA and are there @ present. It is not unusual. Conversely, barring “normal” circumstances, generally only one would be appointed by your MOC. The 2nd would require a slot (not a nom … that could come from your MOC) coming from another source. Unless yours has multiples available in your season. The evidence is clear. If you’re good enough, those “slots” miraculously appear.
