I’ve been at school for a few years and couldn’t decide on a major so I was undeclared while exploring my options. 1/1.5 years ago I decided on finance because I like math and thought pursuing a degree in comp sci or engineering would be difficult with all my accumulated units. I am now getting more info the finance program but not deep enough to where I have a sense of the major. I’m having a hard time deciding if this is the right major for me because although I’m a quick learner, I’ve always had issues understanding investment and stocks and the thought of advising people on where to put their money makes me extremely nervous. At this point my only options are to stay in finance, pursue another major in the business dept (besides accounting, very competitive) or pursue my minor urban studies as a major even though it’s not math heavy. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I’m considering pursuing engineering after completing my bachelors, but I’m not sure yet.
I think you should do an internship in finance or get a part-time gig. Once you have real-life experience applying finance in the workplace you’ll know if it’s right for you.
Regarding your difficulty in understanding investments, do you spend much time reading magazines or newstories for investors? Just getting into a regular habit of reading something like Money Magazine, for example, would help you. Sit in the library regularly and read all the stories as well as the ads.
Agree with the above about an internship.
