I'm trying to look for an internship/research opportunity at a local university. Where do I start? Should I call the uni.'s career center and ask for opportunities for high school students? I hear of so many people having done research under a college prof./expert but I never knew how they managed to get their hands on such experiences. Thanks.

Start with their website - then work any contacts that you or your teachers or family members might have. Then stalk the labs with resume in hand.

It may be a bit late for the government-funded, competitive research internships; deadlines were back in January.

For next year, a general rule:

research internships and their application procedures over Thanksgiving.
Ask for recommendations before Christmas Break.
Write you application over Christmas.
Check to make sure that all parts of the application were received

Assume some sort of screw up along the way - don’t wait until the last minute because something is sure to go wrong: just entering your basic data into some online application systems can take 5 or 6 hours; forwarding PDF transcripts; uploading recommendations in very specific formats, that still don’t go through. Early applications tend to be better written and more appreciated.

Good luck

While it might be good to start with the career center, it’s unlikely a University would offer jobs/internships to high school students. Plenty of their students need jobs/internships already. So, I would start contacting professors individually. Don’t spam; make sure you personalize your emails/letters (usually people send emails). Be sure to prepare a r
