How do I tell a teacher I don't want their recommendation anymore...?

At the beginning of the school year, I asked my sophomore year US history teacher to write me a recommendation. He just told me that he finished it and wanted to send it to schools already, however, I just recently realized that it would probably not be the best idea to have a teacher who had me so long ago write my recommendation because it would not really reflect who I am as a student now.

I already asked a senior year teacher to write a recommendation because I was planning to tell my sophomore year teacher that I did not want his recommendation anymore, but he already wrote it. I feel bad because he spent time writing it, but I think that I have already built a good relationship with this senior year teacher that would probably write me a better and more recent recommendation that reflects who I am as a student now. How do I tell my sophomore year teacher that I don’t want his recommendation anymore? I feel really bad.

Thanks in advance for the help! I appreciate it!

What about sending both?

You might as well send both. I’m not sure what schools you’re looking at, but some require two, anyway.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that another teacher has already written by recommendation. Right now, I’m deciding between whether my sophomore or senior year teacher’s rec should be send to colleges.

Just send all three.

Okay, thank you all for your opinions! Our guidance counselor just tells us that we should only have 2 recs and I’ve read here that having too many recs is often not good.

I’m pretty sure that the teacher won’t be able to know if you send their letter or not due to confidentiality reasons. So, since you have more than two, definitely pick the one that you feel would represent you most accurately. Best of luck to you! Where are you applying to, if you don’t mind me asking?

@outtahere2017 The student doesn’t submit the recs, the teacher does.

@TomSrOfBoston Hm, thats weird. I guess it’s different at every school. At my school, the teachers submit them to the guidance office and guidance sends them out.

Either way, @coolpanda , be sure to make the best decision for you! I’m sure if you don’t pick your sophomore year teacher, they’d understand your reasoning.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I will talk to my sophomore year teacher on Monday in person and tell him about my situation. Hopefully, he understands. Also, our recs are sent to colleges through Naviance so the teachers just submit their recs through there.

And, @outtahere2017, thanks and good luck to you as well! The schools that are currently on my list are Mt Holyoke, Bates, Clark, and a few state schools that are safeties. My stats are honestly pretty low, so I probably don’t compare to the other people on this site.
