I’m considering transferring out of Vandy to somewhere closer to home. I’m a freshman engineer with a 3.84 first semester, and on my midterm report I had all A’s except for a B in circuits, although I tried to explain that with a letter. I have taken/am taking a good deal of upper level courses (e.g. quantum mechanics, complex analysis, multivariate analysis), and I am involved as an engineering mentor, I’m part of a senior design team, and I am vice president of my residential hall. I went to a prestigious high school and graduated with a 3.85, participating in varsity soccer, debate, math team, and some other activities I can’t remember, although I finished high school as state champion in debate. I’m applying to Swarthmore, Haverford, UPenn, Cornell, MIT, and Brown. Any thoughts on my odds?
You will get into one and i would say personally probably more. You’re an impressive student and did exceptional at a prestigious university i think you will be fine… just make sure your essays are respectable.
Thanks a lot! It’s a real relief to hear that because I’m really homesick, among other issues so I’m really hoping to move. I felt my main transfer essay was really strong, and I’m also really happy with my Swarthmore essays (I like Swarthmore the most! ) Now, it’s just a matter of struggling to the end of the semester
While I do think you have done a great job at your at Vandy and you seem to have all the components going for you still note that most of these places have transfer rates of less than 10%. Cornell is one of the higher ones but thats only skewed because of the CC that they have agreements with.
I think you definitely have a shot in getting into these places but at the end of the day these places are extremely hard to transfer into. Hope it works out for you though, being homesick sucks.
Ah, bringing me back down to Earth.
@welphereigo Didn’t mean to sour your mood or anything. Its just that worst case scenario (unless you go to a local CC) you will stay at Vandy.
@thecoolboy1234 haha it’s fine. I’m just trying to be hopeful. Worst case scenario probably is I go to Rutgers where I’ve already been accepted. Somewhere else would be nice though :3
@welphereigo rutgers isnt a bad university and you seem to be fully aware of you decisions but why would you go to rutgers instead of staying at vandy?
@thecoolboy1234 Rutgers is my state school, so if I went there I would be back home. Also, it would mean I would not be at Vandy anymore. Don’t get me wrong, Vandy is a great place for a certain person, and in some ways it has been great for me, but overall I’m not a Vanderbilt student and it can be very difficult to fit in if you’re not.
That’s definitely true. Well although we’re applying to the same school(upenn) i really hope things work out for you!
You seem like a good person and I hope your next school makes you happy!
@thecoolboy1234 I really wish you the best too! I really hope you get into UPenn. I know as well as anyone, (probably yourself, included), that being in the wrong place sucks. I feel like it took a toll on my academics last semester as well as my mental health, and it’s continuing in that vein this semester. I really feel like I need out. I know Rutgers is great, but the more I look into Swarthmore and Haverford, the more I feel that, having learned more about myself through the hellish experience that was my first semester, I could really benefit from a liberal arts college experience, which would be a lot more similar to my high school which I loved and flourished in.
Good luck to you. Swarthmore is an amazing school with an appreciation of intellectual endeavors and with great engineering, something unusual. Usually if you want engineering you forfeit the small school since most small schools can’t afford engineering. Nice that Swarthmore has best of both worlds. Good luck.
Just curious, why wasn’t Vandy a good fit for you? I’m going there next year and I’m a little paranoid
@collegebobollege tell me about your expectations
How come you got a B in circuits?
@bvo112 I was really nervous about the midterm because I knew I had to submit the grade for transferring (read: really really nervous), and as a result I messed up one part of the exam which was worth a lot. My aim is to get an A on the next midterm in a week and a half and then submit that grade. Essentially, I just felt a lot of pressure.
