How do OOS afford Michigan?

Hopefully DRMAN54 we both receive scholarships. But, I’m getting all mine back in the summer so that’s not gone to help we my decision.

Your right were just gone to have to work are asses off freshman year and hope to god they give us scholarships. I just need to get another 12,000 in loans (without any scholarships) to go and so far my Dad has refused to cosign (he thinks I’m being ■■■■■■■■) Hey is there any loan sharks out there?

lol!

I was reading this article for some help on how to manage debt. We are definitely going to have to pull miracles, but if we’re dedicated, I’m sure we can. (Plus if worse comes to worst I’ll just transfer and opt for a better masters degree.)

(I’m not planning on becoming a Civil E yet, still unsure)
Civil Engineers get paid the least when they start out so…
[Average Starting Civil Engineer’s Salary = $53,000](<a href=“Personal Salary Reports and Small Business Compensation Solutions | Salary.com”>http://swz.salary.com/salarywizard/layoutscripts/swzl_salaryresults.asp?op=salswz_psr&hdOmniNarrowDesc=Engineering&hdOmniTotalJobsFound=15&pagefrom=selectjob&redbird=&jobfamilycode=8&joblevelcode=1&hdLocationOption=0&hdSearchByOption=0&hdKeyword=Civil+Engineer&hdJobCategory=EN01&hdZipCode=&hdStateMetro=&hdGeoLocation=U.S.+National+Averages&hdCurrentPage=1&hdViewAllRecords=0&hdSortBy=0&hdJobCode=EN04100000&hdJobTitle=Civil+Engineer+I&hdNarrowDesc=Engineering&hdJSBoolDisplayAdvertisement=&jobcounter=1&countertype=0&totaljoblistnum=15&rdbSearchByOption=0&txtKeyword=Civil+Engineer&hdAjaxDisplaySection1=1&hdAjaxDisplaySection2=0&hdAjaxKeyword=Civil+Engineer&hdAjaxKeywordWithOR=%23Civil%23+OR+%23Engineer%23&key=sal300_ros_mtchedcolr&c=CA6771184316&prepop=2-13)

I wonder if I started with exactly 50,000 no bonuses, how much debt I could handle the first year. Too bad, I’m still naive towards interest so I’m unsure.
I wish I knew how to handle interest and monthly payments.

I calculated my max out in loans to be about $70,000 to 80,000 with 65,000 starting salary (hopefully it will be more$$). I def don’t plan to have that much debt becuase I would be forced to transfer out becuase I wouldn’t be able to get any more loans.

Yeah anyways it’s like three in the morning lol, what am I still doing up?

heres my input… although it may be totally incorrect
im OOS from NY, going to umich next year. i am getting NO financial aid, some local scholarships are pending and basically my parents will be paying for the tuition full…
no im not rich. we’re a middleclass family but my parents have been saving up their money to pay off for my college (we’re a traditional asian family, parents immigrated from china to US for a new start), obvs my parents want me to attend the best school possible no matter the cost [words straight from them], in my opinion my brother who went to carnegie for 4 years, and my parents paid the full 200k+ was ridiculous… michigan which isnt too far, 44k x4 is still expensive but in the long run ill have the prestige behind me when applying for jobs and ill make the money back to my parents back as well as have a higher salary…
in reality im going close to $195,000 in debt, but my parents who have saved up their money will pay that off. they wont settle for a state school even in the state of the economy
i suggested going to a state school binghamton which is an okay school for 4 years, id prob get the full ride, then for graduate id go to an ivy league like upenn, but my brother says its not worth it, going to umich will look much better and benefit me
i talked to my parents about the costs and they dont mind, i actually am demanding them to go to a state school but they wont say no (typical asian parents), so yea now im going to umich for 44k a year… no financial aid
IN MY OPINION, unless your majoring in something like law and maybe even business, go to a good school to start with, cause ull make the money back after graduation

pancake, that sucks man, I’m from ny too and they gave me a good aid =X

Where you get your graduate degree is far more important than where you get your BS degree… so don’t bankrupt yourself so early in the game. Go to an affordable school, and save your money for grad school. Many large companies with then foot the bill or you work for the university and basically get paid to get your grad degree… doesn’t work for other fields, but positively the case for good engineering students

pancak3z. You do know that Michigan IS a state school correct?

i know its a state school, im OOS so im paying the 44k

have you considered a work-study program? also, if you are willing to be a RA (resident advisor) in the dorms your room&board is free.

it must be possible to afford michigan OOS, as more than half my friends are OOS no aid - and they’re definitely not rich, nor loan crazy!

Your right elixris, I think I have found out a way, just have to convince the parents.

hey elixirs how can you apply to be a RA? I’m an oos state student and right now i’m off by 10k…i’m trying to do everything i can!!

I can answer this ^^^

My sister was accepted to be an RA at her private U. She got to know her dorm mates well and often spoke with the RA’s that were there. She also had a lot of experience dealing with kids (tutoring, mentoring, caring). She applied and they took her after an interview. She ultimately didn’t take it because she didn’t need free room and board because she had a full ride and felt other people could use it.

Basically, get to know the residence hall you are applying to, then make sure you have some type of experience managing people. Then be nice during your interview.

But ultimately RA positions are VERY hard to get, so its basically a crap shoot. I’m going to apply as well. I’m gonna pull everything I have to get it. (btw RA positions are sophomores and up)
