If you're OOS, how would/did you manage to pay?

With the tuition so high, how are lots of you who are OOS paying? Is taking a certain amount of loans a good choice? Since I know that they don't give much aid, I'm not sure what I should do to be able to attend with a limited amount of scholarships.

I was going to apply to ann arbor, had my scores and transcripts sent already, but realized that the tuition is just not worth it in the end. Honestly, OOS is just ridiculous, especially when public schools don't give aid.

many, many OOS students at UMich come from families who can afford to pay full fare; if they couldn't it would make much more sense for them to attend private colleges where merit and financial aid are more significant....

it is a personal decision to be made (or in some cases, if they weren't admitted to any other schools on their list)....like some people that we know at Umich...

I'm from OOS and UMich is my first choice.

There are tons of scholarships that my high school offer as well as the county I am a part. They over like 22 million dollars in scholarship each year so I am definitely applying for a couple of those. Also, my dad's work pays for a quarter (or something close to that) of my tuition if I graduate with above a 3.5 in high school and maintain a 3.0 in college. So that is helps with the out of state thing.

When I go to college, my parents are going to be paying 3 out of state tuitions. I think they are crossing their fingers for a rejections from UMich so I'll stay in state. Haha and the sad thing is I think they will get their wish :(

You can get some financial aid if you apply for it. If you put on there that you have other siblings in college (so your parents are paying for them), then you can definitely get some more money.

Michigan students, both in-state and out-of-state, tend to come from upper income families or upper middle income families. This said, Michigan is not as bad as people think when it comes to financial aid. Although the university does not meet 100% of demonstrated need, it does meet 100% if in-stater need and roughly 80% of out of stater needs. Michigan also gives out merit scholraships, but those are generally reserved for very few students.

Whatever, you do, don't put yourself in a situtation where you end up graduating with too much debt. Graduating with $10,000-$20,000 of debt is fine. Anything more than that is hard to stomach.

When will OOS students hear about merit scholarships? Do they have to wait until April?

i second that question

Michigan does award a number of merit scholarships in addition to need-based aids, and some are specifically for OOS. For example:

yeah...i'm an OOS from WI, and would really really like to go to UMAA...however, i haven't figured out how to pay for the high cost yet. I think i'm hanging my chance on aid/scholarships...

Don't worry too much. at least apply and see how much they give you. I got a good financial aid and as OOS student currently pay around little less than 10,000 with some scholarship. So apply early and apply for other scholarships.

Hey,
I'm currently at umich oos and i have to say that if you have great schools in state or possible privates which will give good aid go with that! it's not worth it to take out so many loans just for undergrad. think wisely before coming!

Just go to Wisconsin. It's not worth a couple ten thousand dollars of debt to attend Michigan.

i second that. ann arbor is better but certainly not worth oos cost compared to madison.

I have such a fear that all my son's hard work will be for nothing if I will be unable to afford much ... his dad had open heart surgery at 48, he's not eligible for SS but even though he ended up with brain damage, are no ability to work his old job, (they let him go because of the mental impairment) ... SS doesn't care if you work at the same level you did before the surgery or not .... nope, if you can work even a crappy little part time job, it's no SS for you buddy ... they don't care if he can only work part time at McDonald's or Walmart, it's that he's capable of some kind of work ...... so hopefully we will be eligible for some money via the school. I must admit, paying for school terrifies me more than where or what school he wold get in!

I need to get busy soon with all this financial aid paperwork nightmare!!! yuck!

scholarship + online poker

Wait, so if I'm OOS, they will still help me out financially?

Say I have a EFC of 20k, while UM costs 45k, so they will give me about 20k mixture of grants/loans? (Meeting about 80% for OOS)

i got accepted to umich oos, and it's basically my top school. can someone give me some information regarding all this financial stuff? how do i know if i get any sort of scholarships? do i need to apply for them, or will michigan let me know?
