How do we vote?

So how does voting work at UCLA? Are there polling places on campus?

Do we need to reregister if we are already registered to vote in our home counties?

Or do most people just use absentee ballots?

Yes there are usually two polling places in the dorms (usually DeNeve and Hedrick) but you have to reregister yourself with your dorm address to vote there. Otherwise, you can sign up to receive an absentee ballot from your home county, which you mail in a few weeks before the election.... up to you.

What about for non-residents? Should I be registering in my home state with my permanent address and using an absentee ballot, or should I register for LA county, even though I have no plans of claiming residence for tuition purposes but I eventually plan to reside at after grad school? Any citations or links to voting code would be helpful.

What if I register with my West LA address. Can I still vote at UCLA?

I did mine by absentee ballot.

They will send you something several weeks before the election that tells you where your "assigned" polling place is. However, I think you can just show up at any polling place in Los Angeles and bring that form and they'll take you.

If it's your first time voting, register in CA. If you voted in a different state, register there. My friend voted in AZ and then tried it in CA; he couldn't vote in the primaries.

I registered at orientation (or so I thought), but also received a form in the mail a few days ago....do I fill that one out too, or have they just not recorded my previous registration yet?

I registered to vote in July and I just received a confirmation in the mail a day ago. So it can take 1-2 months to confirm it. You can fill that one out too if you want, but it's best not to confuse them with multiple registrations for the same person/address.

Keep in mind that if you re-register in Westwood, you will be added to the jury pool for LA County. They can then send you a jury summons. Being a full time student will not get you out of jury duty, and they will make you reschedule and come in during your vacation. Even if your parents live hundreds of miles away.

So for the Home Address part on the registration form we put where we actually live and on the Mailing Address part we put our dorm address?

if your home is in a swing state you might want to register to vote there absentee instead of voting in California

I've worked as a poll worker in my town and I know that they strictly enforce that you must vote at your own precinct polling place, unless you are dropping off an absentee ballot. I'm guessing that is a California policy and not a Yolo county policy.

For really.

If you're planning to live in CA, then register to vote there. D receives her absentee ballot at home (OOS) and we mail it to her.

^That's what my sister does (she lives on the East Coast right now).

just curious, but if we do end up chaning our address and vote at the dorms, will the lines be huge/is it electronic?

Maybe this registration checker will help (no matter who you are voting for):
