How do/will you afford Wake Forest?

Alright, so i'm not really expecting any scholarships from wake if I get accepted. Considering this is a really expensive school, how could I justify going here instead of college park (my state school) or a school in ohio where I would have 75% tuition paid? Is it worth it coming out of school with over 100k in debt?

I think I might be in the same situation as you. (Assuming I get accepted), my test scores/school grades aren't super stellar for any HUGE scholarships, and I don't qualify for financial aid(my family is upper middle class), but financing a Wake education is still a huge cost for us. Too, I got accepted to Ohio State, and my parents reallllyy want me to go there, but I realllyyy want to go to Wake. It would be super sweet if anyone(e.g. current wake forest students) knows the average amount of aid that students ususally get?

lol, yep, we're in the exact same situation, STEF2098

I heard wake is pretty good w/financial aid. By good I mean they'll meet your full need. So anything beyond ur EFC, they'll take care of. But the ratio of grants/scholarships to work/study/loan is about 2:1

I got in early and for Christmas my grandparents gave me money for all 4 years of full tuition. Yay
Good luck to everyone else and I hope to see you in August

^Wow, awesome Christmas gift!

If you don't qualify for financial aid then the only way you will get anything is if you receive a Merit Based scholarship, which is an entirely different application who's deadline has already passed. If you didn't apply for those, you aren't going to get anything.

One of the best state schools in Ohio is Miami, which happens to be where my sister goes. They are actually fairly similar schools. The differences being that Wake is better, smaller, private, and doesn't have a ton of people from Ohio that go there.

Maryland is a good school too though. You have to look at what you value in a school, and decide for yourself if it is worth the money. Having an idea of what you want to do after you graduate could be very helpful too. Make sure that the school you choose has the programs that you would be interested in. (ie. my sister decided a few months after started at miami that she wanted to be a nurse. miami doesn't have a nursing school on campus. that is a problem.) Also think about whether or not you want to go to graduate school, and how you would go about paying for that if you are already in a lot of debt.

Miami is pretty expensive for a state school. It's a great option (I may be there next year), but especially if you're not from Ohio, tuition will be pretty steep.

My daughter is going to attempt to get in to Wake next year. We will not qualify for financial aid, the tuition at Wake would nearly liquidate our hard earned savings, or put our child into some amount of debt that we are unsure is worth it. We will consider this VERY carefully against U of MD College Park, which she is nearly assured of admittance and is a no-brainer from a tuition affordability standpoint.

If we get hit by a money truck (i.e. she gets a considerable outside scholarship, which is possible) she might go there. Won't rule it out, but I tend to wonder if it is really worth it.

I'm still trying to figure out if Wake is worth it

I am in love with the school and my parents want me to go there I just can't imagine making them spend 200,000+ when I might be just as happy at a school where I got nearly a full ride

bethyy- I imagine you could appeal your fin. aid package if you got one and if not you may be competitive enough to make wake fight for you (aka show them what you're getting from another school and maybethey'll consider giving you more). I'm not sure if it will work, but it's worth a shot if you really want to go there.

sparkle- unfortunately I can't appeal my fin aid package because my parents didn't file the fafsa forms knowing we wouldn't get anything, because technicallyy we CAN afford wake, but I have two little brothers and two retired parents so it wouldn't be a great scenario.
I thought about telling them what I'm getting from other schools and essentially begging for more but I don't think Wake usually gives more and the other schools that I got scholarships to are all a small step below wake.

I can relate very well bethyy. We are also waiting to see how it all shakes out.

Being from Winston-Salem, I know a lot about Wake, its fin aid policy is fairly generous for the middle to upper middle class. However for those that don't qualify, it can become a tough struggle to finance Wake. Its a small private school and cost lots of money, it gives out most of its available funds for the really needy aplicants and those that receive scholarships, for some its a coin toss.
