Are most of the private loans are credit based? What kind of loans should I take out if I don't have a cosigner? And how do I check my credit report?

I highly recommend you visit http://www.finaid.org

"Are most of the private loans are credit based?" Besides parental loans :). For the most part the credit history is a good check against your history, also if you don't have a credit history look into alternative loans from your financial aid department. Employment, references etc might be asked on private loans.

Credit History is about the only means they have to assure themselves they will get their $$ back if you don't have a cosignor.

"What kind of loans should I take out if I don't have a cosigner?"
1st Parent (hehe) 2nd Stafford 3rd Perkins 4th anything else.

Goto https://www.annualcreditreport.com (you can check all 3 from this site) You get one free check every year because of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003. I recommend you either print it out as you get 1 CHECK every year.

Is parent loan better than stafford loan?

Yes, for you...But not for parent :)

When I was saying 1) Parent 2) stafford 3)Perkins yadda I was joking that the Parent as in taking a loan from your parent. But, parent loans are another matter. If you ever are offered subsidized stafford...take it.

About your credit check, is it safe to use this site: https://www.annualcreditreport.com ? Or is it better to use a site like freecreditreport.com or go to the three big credit bureau's site or mail them?
