How do you contact Harvard Athletics?

With the influx of people on here who are 'recruited' athletes, I was just wondering about how I could go about making myself best 'known' to the athletic department at Harvard, and more specifically the basketball coaches? I understand that colleges have scouts that look for talent nationally, but since I am in Australia I do not have this privalege, and consequently have to promote myself in a sense. Anyway, I would really appreciate if someone here might be able to advise me on the what would be the best thing to do in my situation?

if you go to the Harvard Athletic site, and choose a sport, they usually list the contact information of the coach

I have the same "problem" like vrumchev, but I'd like to contact the Swimming Varsity Coach. So what do you do once you have their contact information?? I mean you can't just try to impress them with your athletic achievments and then hope he calls adcoms?!?

Ask the coach if you can supply him with times. Swimming is a numbers-driven sport. Its not like football or basketball, where the quality of the competition matters. Its more like track, where the numbers tell the story.

The OP has another problem. Coaches can't possibly see every applicant in action, ecen at camps or tournaments. Generally, they will be happy to receive tapes, assessments by your high school or prep coaches, record of honors received, etc that may be some testament to your ability.

If you have applied, and the coach is impressed with your ability, he or she knows how to make his or her views known.

how about those, who have been in touch with coaches, but haven't been able to submit tapes for certain reasons...would the adcoms still view an accomplished athlete as a potential athlete even without a coach's recommendation?...do they even consider some athletically accomplished but non-recruited applicants as extra athletes they may need to fill the bench?

Athletic achievement or leadership (ie, captain if a team) is certainly an EC that is considered at any Ivy, but there is not the considerable "tip" given to recruited athletes lobbied for by the coaches.

right, i agree with you byerly, there's not that clear tip, but if you are obviously accomplished, and state in the "what else would you like us to know?" that you would plan to walk on no matter how little playing time, could you still be considered a potential bench warmer as an extra space u might fill at the school?

Sure ... but as I say, that is no different from hoping you'd be a contributing member of the debating club: a higher rating in "Extracurricular/Athletic" category, perhaps, but NOT earning the tip that comes from being on a coach's wish list.

right...agreed

So would it be sufficient to fill out the "Prospective student-athlete Questionnaire" in the "Recruiting"-section or is a personal letter to the head coach better?

And how do they assess my qualities? Do I only have to send them some documents with my record times, or are the stats I mail them through the form sufficient?

Talk To The Coach!!

Byerly, how should I contact the coach? I have been to the Harvard athletics site however there are no contact details or questionaires for Men's Basketball.

Blademaster, I have my doubts about whether coaches even look at the poeople who submit the questionaire.. But I guess its worth a shot...

Thank you very much for that... Do you have any advice as to what I might go about saying in my first e-mail?

If you're a potential Harvard student, you should be able to figure that out!

Express your interest in applying, ask what info he'd like to have, and how and when to supply it.

Alright, thanks again Byerly.

Blademaster-what are your times?

just email the coach and tell him you'd be itnerested in playing for him etc no need to be really pushy. just get in contact with him and stay in contact letting him know that you do want to play for his team. have your coach write a kind of recommendation for you, and try and send him some video or something. let him see if you're good enough to pursue and then later on show him your transcript and ask if he thinks you'd be a good match for the school. tell him harvard is your choice and ask if he will support you in front of the admissions committee. they'll be honest

and yes use the form thats what its there for
