Is filling out the questionnaire for recruits on a team’s website an actual good way to get your name to the coaches? Is there a better way? Also just curious …which would be harder to get recruited for wrestling UPenn or Harvard?
It depends on the coach. With some it’ll be sufficient but others will pretty much disregard those submissions. From m my family’s experience, a phone call or a personalized email is more reliable.
What would one say when they contacted them through an email or phone call?
I’d definitely email the coach in addition to filling out the questionnaire. Our son kept his short and to the point. He listed his sport’s awards/honors, stat’s (HS and travel ball), gpa/rank, test scores and linked to a YouTube site where he had loaded game and skills video. He also mentioned he would be attending xyz camp(s) during the summer where he knew the coach would also be attending.
To get an idea of how competitive Harvard, Penn or any school’s program is, go their website. You can see their record but as importantly most of them have detailed roster pages with bio’s so you can see how you stack up. I linked Harvard’s page for you, but this is basic research you should be doing if you are seriously considering being a recruited athlete. http://www.gocrimson.com/sports/wrest/2017-18/roster
What would one say? My kids said something to the effect of “These are my GPA, test scores, and national ranking in the sport. I’m considering your college. Interested in supporting me?”
It worked well for them. Good luck.
I just committed to Harvard for volleyball, and I didn’t fill out a single recruiting form. Every case is different but I found emailing them was the best way to start talking to the coaches. I attended camp for two years, had them watch me in person multiple times, and went on two visits before I committed. I called them on the phone once, and the conversation wasn’t memorable. If you’re serious about a school, I HIGHLY recommend going to camp. Without going, I’m not sure I would’ve been able to establish such a strong relationship with my coaches. Good luck!
