How do you deal with academic disappointments?

I just got a science homework back from the other day, and I missed one really obvious question. I got a 94.5 as opposed to a 100. I felt really stupid and angry at myself, and of course very envious of my peers who had just been a tiny bit more careful than I had.

How do you guys deal with little academic disappointments like this? How do you not fret over every last point and every last bit of preparation/checking over content for a homework, test, exam, essay, etc.? Usually it wears down after the next couple of days, but it makes me feel really stupid and I'd like to know how to just "shrug it off."

(Also: what is an ideal average for each class? as long as I have a 90 or higher in each class, I'm good for the Ivies, right?)

I just suck it up. It’s just homework. I don’t know about your school, but homework doesn’t really count for much in my classes. And, since it’s so early in the year, I know I have the rest of the semester to make up for it. Plus, I probably wouldn’t have b!tched over that score. An A is an A to me. Lol. I’m the worst CCer ever.

lol my school doesn’t even show the averages. An A, regardless the number, is an A.

Jesus its homework, deal with it man. You want to hear disappointment? Try missing the next grade in a class by half a point three times in two years. And even after that happened sure, I was mad for a little but in the end there’s nothing you can do about it and you need to just move on. If you are that upset about a homework problem you have bigger problems to worry about.

Yeah. And if you’re school has 90=A then if you get all 90’s for every class, colleges would view it the same way as 100+ for each class.

Yes; as far as I know, a 90 is an A or a 4.0 at my school. So I’m in the good zone :)

^which brings us back to the original point of this thread? lol
you’re wasting CC’ers time.

The confirmation is comforting. It’s nice to know that the difference in weight between a 100 and a 95 (or even a 100 and a 90) is slim (sure, 5/10 points is big, but once you get up that high, it starts to matter less and less).

i get stressed over points like this as my grade is often on the borderline and these little things make the difference. teachers hate it though. my advice - just ignore it until the end of the semester.

When you have these “academic disappointments” (and I hesitate to call a 94.5 on a homework grade disappointing), it helps to put it into perspective. You perceive high school as a series of short-term goals, like getting perfect grades on minor assignments. You need some sort of direction, and when you feel like you’ve failed something, remind yourself that it’s only a trivial setback in the larger scheme of things.

A 94.5 on a homework grade won’t make an ounce of impact on your life twenty years from now. Hell, it probably won’t have any effect that lasts until tomorrow morning.

Also, it takes more than straight As to be “good for the Ivies”. Truthfully, you shouldn’t go through school worrying about looking good for Ivy League universities. Enjoy what you do, and success will come to you.

Don’t worry about anything until the end of the semester approaches. If you’ve received A’s in the past, just do what you’ve done before. If you are in danger of not getting an A before the end of the semester (4-5 weeks), then you should start worrying.

I know this is naive advice, but try to take your education as what it really is–an education. When you miss the little stuff on homework it doesn’t mean you don’t know the material, or that you won’t be just as successful (or more successful) as classmates that didn’t make that mistake. With a little change in perspective, life can be so much more enjoyable! But I totally understand how you feel. :)

Today I got a C in a huge Spanish group project that I technically deserved, but would have been willing to work much harder for (and didn’t due to restraints from being in a certain group, but that’s not an excuse). This is probably going to drop me to a B in the class given its heavy weight…and might kill my hopes of getting a 4.0 for the first time since freshman year.

I got home, ate cheesecake, and blasted music. There was another thread on HSL today that was similar to this topic, and two people said ‘**** happens’. About summed it up.

Try crying until your eyes run out of water

I was never an over-achiever to start with, and my grades have improved in the last few years, so I was always used to not always getting the mark I wanted.

You got a 94.5 on a homework? Do you really think you have ANY chance at the Ivies…???

I get in truble when i get bad grades :(

Last year I would trace LOSER into my arm. I have a new motto this year: just chill. NOt everything’s about college.

^ Is your name from “Papercut” by Linkin Park?

STOP FEEDING THE ■■■■■■. THEY WILL REPRODUCE. THAT’S WHY THERE’S SO MANY!

sorry OP. lmao but yeah just get over it, i mean, if it was a test grade, id be pretty bummed, but for hw, it doesn’t really matter.
