How do you deal with College Essay Writer's Block?

When every idea seems stupid, every intro lacks potential, every anecdote forced or contrived, and then you start getting caught up on the little details, and the creativity ceases to flow, and all your useless attempts end up crumpled and thrown into the wastebasket (metaphorically speaking, since most of us type our essays I'm assuming)....what do you do?

How do you rejuvenate your source of inspiration and creativity and passion to craft a college essay?

I go on CC and mope and it does absolutely zilch for me, lol. can anyone think of a better way?

read "ON Writing the College Application Essay" by Harry Bauld. Also, the random times when something good pops into your head, write it as a note on your phone or something. The process Bauld outlines will be very helpful to you though.

Do something fun (watch TV, play video games, run outside). Sleep more (your brain tends to think better when you have more sleep).

When do I think is the best time to craft a unique and creative essay that's in the voice of you? I personally chose late at night somewhere between 12am and 3am. Why? When it's that late, and you've had enough sleep from the night before, you can usually think of something wierd. Why? During the day, you'll tend to suppress wierd thoughts, because you'll constantly (though may be not consciously) think of ways to impress admission officers. At night, you tend to be more tired and you want to go to bed, but you have this stupid essay to finish ... so you'll write something without second thoughts about it. That way, you have something that's really you. At least, that's how I wrote all my essays over summer break. It works for me, but it may not work for you!!!

In any case, if you do have a writer's block, stop writing and come back to the computer at a later time. There will always be a tomorrow (of course, unless you're working the night before apps are due ... then you're screwed big time!)

I hope this helped. PM me if you have any more questions.

Think about what is important to you and what you truly enjoy doing.

hey thanks everyone!!

@ab2013, haha i totally followed your advice and started writing an essay at 2am. it was really bad at first, and i had reverted to 2nd person which was really weird while i wrote, but at the end (around 3 am i believe), i read over it and realized i had a lot of really good content in it, i just needed to rewrite it to improve the style. using what i wrote, i restarted the essay on the same topic right there and then. by 5am i had finally written the first draft of an essay that i can actually be proud of...the first of at least 10 attempts from the last month or so that i can seriously consider sending to colleges.

of course waking up the next morning was absolute hell but it was totally worth it!

Hey hannahmontana!

Yeah ... I did that during the last few Saturdays of the summer. Sunday mornings were completely awful. By the time school started, it felt as if I had moved to Asia or something.

However, I'm glad you found my advice helpful! (It really doesn't work for everyone tho)

Hmmm maybe we can exchange essays and critique on each other's essay. PM it to me if you want and I"ll do the same.

ab2013, I could not have said it better myself. case in point: this morning i was absolutely stumped at a question where i have to discuss what club i would start and why. ladies and gentleman, it's 1:39 in the morning, i am letting my weird ideas flow, and i am starting a paper about why a club about batman would be best for the community. even more shocking, i actually think its pretty bamf essay. if this essay doesn't get me in, i dont know what will!!
