How do you get a Perkins loan?

First off, does this loan still exist? I saw a thread on CC that said it doesn’t exist anymore, but I read several other threads with people saying they were offered Perkins loans…
If it still exists, can I email my college and ask them to offer me a Perkins Loan?

Perkins Loans are awarded to lower income students. Each college has a limited amount of Perkind money. It is usually awarded on a first come first served basis to those who apply earliest for financial aid, and who are eligible as lower income at the college.

You can ask…but because this is limited funding, there may not be any Perkins money left at your college.

I think only certain colleges still get perkins loans. At one instate school I received one and another school I did not even though I applied for Fin aid at the same time, met both early dates and they are the same price.

@CollegeCaptain

At one school…you were in the lower income for acceoted students…and got a Perkins loan.

At the other…you were not in the lower income group,at THAT school.

This varies by school. Each school determines what “lower income” means.

Not all schools participate in the Perkins Loan program. When they do, the funds are limited and go to the lowest income students.

My daughter was offered a Perkins loan as part of her FA package. We are not low income but her school meets need and we have two in school.

Okay, thanks for all of the info. After doing some more research, I discovered that my college does participate in the Perkins loan program. I’ll go ahead and ask them if they can offer the loan to me

@twogirls

If you got a Perkins Loan…yoir college determined that you were higher need at THAT college.
