How do you guys define match/reach schools?

I thought if my SAT score in in the range of school's sat 25th / 75th Percentile, it can be match with a decent GPA, great recommendation letters, solid EC.

But if my sat score is not above 50% of the school's sat score, that school is not my match?

For example,
U of rochester has

SAT Critical Reading: 600 / 700
SAT Math: 650 / 740
SAT Writing: 610 / 700

My sat score is CR:620, M:680, W:620. As you can see, my score is in the range but not above average. So U of rochester is reach for me?

If those SAT scores are the 25/75 %tile of those applicants accepted, then you should be a match with your background!

But if the scores are just the 25/75 %tile of all applicants, then putting yourself in the 75+%tile would be helpful

thank you~~

It’s a reach-match. Somewhere in between. If you’re in the 75th percentile then you’re a solid match and will likely get in, barring that they are ^no mess ups on other parts of the application/
