How do you know that you're an AP Scholar? Does the award come by mail ("Congratulations, you're an AP Scholar") or do you just automatically call yourself an AP Scholar (without an official confirmation) when you get 3 tests over the score of 3. If the Collegeboard informs you by mail, how long does it usually take you to find out that you're designated an AP Scholar?

your official report that comes in the mail in July after the AP exams in May will have your updated scholar designation on it. I think they also sent a separate certificate for scholar awards.

My daughter got a letter from the College Board congratulating her and there was a certificate in with it. There are different levels. If I recall she was an AP scholar with Distinction. It took quite a while to get the letter after the tests and we didnt expect it. Didnt even know they had awards like that.

IIRC, your score report that you get in July only has scholar designations that you've earned in previous years. Sometime in September or so, CB sends out letters and certificates to AP Scholars for the current testing cycle. Like angstridden said, it takes quiet a while after the official score reports are released. If you know you're going to get the the award and you are filling out applications before the official notification comes, you can write "AP Scholar (expected)" or something like that

Wouldn't it require scores that are 5s?

Nope. Here are the requirements for AP Scholar awards

Yes my D. along with a few others was an AP Scholar with Distinction. I recall one girl in the school had a higher designation. I dont recall it being called AP State Scholar though..cant recall what it was.
What was interesting was the number of names from our school that were NOT on the list of AP Scholars that were valedictorians. Several kids never took one AP class and were vals.
Fortunately they have changed that system here and it is fairer now..Previously you could take the easiest courses available get a 4.0 and graduate valedictorian.
But that is a whole different discussion.

I find it funny that State Scholar is probably harder to get than National Scholar. . .

is the AP scholar awarded yearly? What if I take two AP's this year and two more next year? Does that mean I dont qualify because the min. requirement is three?

The tests are cumulative. If you take two tests this year and two next year, then after next year's tests, you will get the award (assuming you get the required scores)
