I am considering on joining the swim team but here is the thing. My school does not have a pool so swim practice is at a indoor public pool 20 minutes away. The coach said practice will be done at 6:30 so I should be home a 7. However the coach said there will also be daily mourning practices which start at 5 AM.

Anyone else do swim before and how did you manage homework from AP classes while getting at least 8 hours of sleep?

I find that if I get less than 8 hours of sleep I have trouble performing at my best.

Any other swimmers here?
I did some calculations, since I will get home at 7 and wake up at 4 which is 9 hours of time at home. 8 hours of that is sleeping. That leaves 1 hour left which will be for eating,walking the dog, and showering. How on earth will I do my homework???

I need advice, I really like swimming but I don’t want my grades to drop.

I’m a junior on swim and I might be able to give you some advice. How many hours of homework are you getting nowadays? Do you swim for a USS team? Will your parents or siblings be willing to walk the dog? How many days each week do you have morning practice?

I’m sorta in a similar situation with basketball. I tend to do some of my homework during lunch, on the bus and after school while I’m waiting for sports to start. You would be surprised how that time is wasted and can be used doing other activities. Do the small worksheets and stuff on the bus rides and notes during lunch in the library. Some days you are just going have to sacrifice an hour of sleep though.

USE THE WEEKEND to get ahead on pre-assigned homework. Say you are taking APUSH and you have a week to write the notes to chapter 30 or something. Instead of doing it a little everyday, spend Sunday working on it. If you can get ahead on homework over the weekend, the load of schoolwork is relieved.

Yeah hockey is pretty much the same. I’m taking 4 APs, playing hockey 6-7 times a week (2-3 hrs at a time), and I manage to get HW done early enough to get 6 hours of sleep on average. I have hockey late at night, which is different from most sports, so I try and finish HW before going (usual practice time is 7:15-10:00). Oh and like the OP I travel about 20 minutes to practice each night. Games vary from 20 minutes away to 3 hours away.

I’m getting usually at least an hour of homework. No my parents won’t walk the dog because they have work, and also I’m an only child. We have morning practices everyday…

@livelaugh7
Yeah I agree.
I’m actually am taking APUSH right now lol. It’s pretty much the class that gives the most homework.

People do their homework at school, in study hall or during lunch. They learn to do homework in the car. They hook up (in the friend sense!) with people in their classes who do the same sport and work during breaks at meets or tournaments.

Also be honest about the time commitment vs. what you will get out of it. FWIW, my son gets 1 hour of homework per AP class every day, and he has three. He practices and plays sports up to 20 hours per week and has to fit in his homework.

Definitely use the weekend and any travel time.

If you want A’s in all your classes, plan ahead which classes not to get an A in a quarter, but still get an A overall. This is a risky strategy, but it can payoff really well.

My kids have been competitive swimmers all through high school. They only get 6-7 hours of sleep a night and really use the weekends. Do you really have morning practice 5 days and afterschool5 days plus Saturday? I have never heard of that much practice. My kids have 3 mornings a week at 5am. That is very standard with very high level swimming around here.

@rhandco
I don’t have a study hall and lunch is only 30 minutes.I can try to use travel time but I’m driving lol.

@ahsmuoh

6 hours dang. My goal is to get 8 hours a night but it probably won’t happen. Yes I have practice in the morning and after school plus Saturday. I know it’s crazy but my school is competitive in sports and try to win state every year.

I row crew at a very competitive level. I try to do homework every free second that I can.

I wake up at 5:45 every morning to do extra cardio work (1 hr) before getting ready for school. I’ll get to school, snack on my lunch throughout the day (I bring my own), then do homework for the 30 mins of lunch block. I don’t have any study halls! At 2:30 when school ends I’ll stay after and do HW for 30 mins before driving to practice (a 30 min commute) for my 3:45-6:30 practice. Then I get stuck in rush hour traffic, get home, shower/dinner and it’s 7:30ish. Then I just have to crank out homework as efficiently as possible and try and be in bed by 10:45. It’s worked so far!

@Blake8 I’m a sophomore swimmer and my swim season is going on right now!! I’m our school’s current record holder for the 100 fly, 100 free, 200IM, and am on the relay teams that hold the school’s 200 Medley Relay and 400 free relay record. I also hold the record for the fastest 200 IM in the county and fastest 100 fly and 100 free in our school’s league. I swim from 4:30am-6:30am on weekdays everyday before school and 3:15-6:30 on weekdays after school. I swim from 6am-10am on Saturdays, and 5pm-8pm on Sundays. School goes from 7:30am-2:30pm for me and I go to swim straight after. We don’t have a pool either, ours is about 15 minutes away. I’m taking Honours precalc, honours Spanish 3, APUSH, chemistry, AP Biology, and Honours Language Arts 10. I do homework everyday during the 27 minute lunch break at school. I also spend almost all of my passing time between classes doing homework rather than socialising. I do my homework while eating dinner and basically do homework from after dinner until 30 minutes before I sleep. I spend 30 minutes every night doing anything I want, and I figure it works pretty well! I sleep at around 9:30 if I don’t have any tests the next day and 10 if I do. If you’re serious about swim and are seriously worried about school, as long as you put in the effort, you can do it!

I am a freshman swimmer. Here are my tips to you:
• Use your weekend wisely! I cannot stress this enough. It helps me so much with the workload. If you have tests the following week, study the bulk of the info throughout the weekend. Also, utilize the weekend to catch up on sleep.
• I just switched teams, but I used to swim on a team 30+ minutes away (depending on traffic). I would say to do your busy work in the car (i.e. math problems, worksheets). If it is dark on the way home, get a reading light.
• Try and get all of your busy work done by the time swim practice is over. This means do it at school during a lunch period, free, activities, etc. The few minutes you take doing HW at school will save you a lot of time later.
• Limit phone usage during the week. I barely use mine at all. Most of my friends do HW with their phone right next to them. PUT IT AWAY and it will save you so much time!

I do Colorguard, and although we don’t have morning practices, our practices last until 7.

But you’re not going to get eight hours of sleep. Hahaha no. Welcome to the high-school life.

I still manage to get around 7 (I wake up at 6); I do some of my homework during read period (I don’t know if they have that at your school), any classes where I don’t have to do much, and at lunch. I also just do homework at home. It doesn’t actually take that much time–I take all honors and I’m a year ahead in math. I still manage to get my weekly TV in. I have friends who have less ECs and easier classes than me, but they get less sleep; but that’s because they don’t manage their time. Don’t procrastinate. Actually work on the weekends.
