Well, I've been trying to self-study. But I get really distracted, and bored. I start taking breaks, and then half and hour has gone before I know it. Or I stop before I planned to. I think part of the problem is I don't technically have to do it, so I don't have enough focus.

What do you guys do to keep yourself motivated?

Before I was sitting my AP’s when I got distracted I just thought about being rescinded at the university I have a place at for the fall and that was enough to keep me going!

Why are you self studying during the summer?

My interest in the course material is enough to keep me motivated. If you’re not studying a subject you like, then maybe you should think of something else.

I think of the college I want to go to, then of the applicant stats on cc. Then i remind myself that there is no way I could have stats like that without working hard, and that the self study is part of that. I also eat a lot of sugar :)

Personally, I like self studying. School is so inefficient, it just galls me.

The reason I’m self-studying is because I was going to take a summer class at the local CC but it got filled up, and decided I would do it on my own. Since I’m taking lots of APs next year, I know I have to at least go over the basics for Calculus so I don’t fail (I’m not very good at math). I normally would only self-study if it was a topic I was really interested in.

Arghh, I think I will just power through, hopefully I will be able to concentrate better.

Think about your dream college, and imagine that self-studying will get you closer to it.

I find this post funny, because now that summer has started, I feel weird when I’m NOT studying! I seriously have the urge to just sit down and study all day and night or I feel unproductive.

I make myself a schedule. haha.
I don’t follow it 100% of the time, but I’ve found that it keeps me on task for the most part.
But I’m also interested in all the subjects I’m self-studying. I don’t think I could force myself to self-study US History over the summer.

I’m only motivated when I care to be motivated. This occurs if and only if I actually am interested in the subject or the deadline or test date is tomorrow.

^Well for me there are different circumstances. I self study for the following reasons.

1) Because a class you will be taking this fall is notoriously hard. Apparently my Alg II H teacher is super hard (I checked the class roster and only 3 people out of 30 had A/A-'s) So in this case, if you know the class will be hard and you want to get an A, it might be beneficial to study ahead of time.

2) Because you want to take an AP test and your school doesn’t offer it or you don’t have room in your schedule. (eg: Psych, Enviro)

3) Your school’s course is lame and you actually want to learn something. Latin is soooo slow at my school, so I’m just self-studying it. It’s nice because you don’t have hw or tests, but it still requires a lot of work.

4) You’re crazy and you actually enjoy the topic :] I’m learning Greek (actually I’m attempting to…it’s really hard) because I find it fascinating. I haven’t gotten far at all though because I just can’t seem to find the time for it :[

I imagine myself a few months in the future, smugly writing down the words “self-studied” on my college application. It’s pretty inspiring, haha.
