I mean, do you have to pay everything before you start, or in monthly quotes or at the end/yearly? what is the process?

It depends on the school.
With the oldests school, they participated with Tuition Management Services, which helped you spread payments out over the year ( after FA deductions). We started in June or July for upcoming year, just depends on how much cash you have on hand I guess.

With youngests school, we pay before the end of each term, and after she registers for the next.

Students usually pay before each semester begins.

Some places have installment plans, and you can pay part of the bill each month.

Typically a financial aid award will show a way to pay for each semester in a lump sum provided you have cash on hand to pay your expected family contribution. If you are covering that part on a pay as you go basis, schools may have payment plans but there is usually a small fee added for using them.
