How do you prepare for occupational therapy while in high school?

I’m currently a junior wanting to study occupational therapy in college but I can’t decide on what courses to take senior year to prepare. My schedule would fit either AP Biology or AP Psychology plus an anatomy/physiology elective. Which would be better to prepare for college courses or more impressive on my transcript?

Biology and Anatomy and physiology would better prepare you for OT school.

Do you think it’s too much work if I take both classes? Because the tests would be on the same days based on my school’s testing schedule.

It would depend on your other classes.

@carolinamom2boys If I took both AP biology and anatomy, my schedule would also have history, english, and AP Calculus. Taking anatomy would mean dropping AP language and I’ve heard it’s best to take 3 AP classes senior year.

I’d take biology over anatomy. You would be expected to retake anatomy in college .

Ok, thank you for the advice  much appreciated

You’re welcome. I’ve been an OTR for 30
years.

Oh that’s awesome! Sorry, I just have one more question if you don’t mind, would taking biology be more for the AP credit or for the background in preparation for college OT courses?

Background . I’d definitely retake it in college.

Okay, thank you again! I do hope I end up being an OT as well  it’s a great career from what I’ve seen.

It is. Lots of options. Never boring.

Maybe you can shadow an occupational therapist this summer?

Yes, I have shadowed at both an elementary school and at a senior rehab center. Both workplaces were very interesting.

Unfortunately , most volunteers need to be 18 these days @mommdc and OP is a junior. A lot depends on the facility. She may be able to work something out with a private practice.

Oh I just thought of this, would taking AP Calculus or AP Statistics or both be more beneficial in regards to college OT courses?

I did not have Calculus, but I did take statistics .

Ok, I’ll see if I can perhaps take both classes.
