How does cold affect Middlebury life?

I'm from CT and know how cold it gets in the Northeast in mid-winter. I'm just concerned that Middlebury may be so cold at certain times that it would be difficult to go to the gym or a party, especially if your dorm is on the other side of campus. Have any students here found that the cold weather is a burden or hindrance?

Thanks

If you’re from CT, then you have nothing to worry about. It’ll be colder than you’re used to in the dead of winter, but not by so much that you’ll freak out. Someone from Southern Cali or Hawaii or Florida may have more of a problem adjusting to the cold.

It gets cold, Really cold, but honestly, you’ll develop a sense of pride from knowing you can take it. It’s hard to know whether the cold could prevent you from doing something without knowing your cold thresholds. I can say that the cold never prevented me from doing anything while at Midd, but it would have had to get unreasonably cold to keep me from taking part in all the great activities on campus.

I should say, however, that I turned down a full scholarship at a top grad school because I didn’t want to be in the south, so maybe I’m not the best example.

thanks for the info guys. anyone else care to chime in??

We live in the midwest where it gets even colder. The worst thiing about cold weather is not the cold, it’s the wind and the wet.

the cold weather certainly affects some aspects of the social life, though not in a serious way. when it’s cold you’re, of course, less likely to walk into town to eat, and you also don’t really want to go to parties that are far away from your dorm. (though if you drink enough you won’t really care about the cold). it’s atrocious to walk to class in the morning or when it’s windy, but if you’re from CT i think you should be fine.

and if you’re from texas? Know alot of kids who have issues with the weather who come from the south?

i’d say everyone gets used to it after a while. i know a couple of texans who’re doing fine.

I’m Texan and I’ve survived!

Just drink enough before you go out that you don’t notice the cold on your way to the parties.

But in all seriousness, you’ll get used to it quickly. Don’t even worry about it, it never gets THAT cold (except a few days a year).

I’m from SoFla and I got used to the cold over the course of my first winter. I don’t believe it was ever too cold to prevent us from going out to party or to the gym. Its a good excuse to expand your wardrobe too. Where else will you have snow up to your hips for one month of the year?

wow, seriously, the cold weather is the fun of it! ppl just love *****ing about the weather, but, honestly, you grow to like it. im going away this year and just can’t imagine what life would be without being able to whine how cold it is/have my eyebrows freeze.

My husband complains of nose wall… when it’s so cold with no humidity and so all mucous just dries out and freezes to the side of your nose. It doesn’t happen to me, but it’s clearly an issue for him. Frankly, I think what’s mostly true is it gives him something to complain about that is CAUSED by the weather as opposed to it being about the weather. A little variety, if you will.
