Most majors at Cornell allow transfer in. Take some required courses, do well, and you are in.
Not as restrictive as some public unis where they have strict budgetary limits in each college within the uni.
As a parent I found my son was quite able to explore other colleges than his own. In the end he decided to apply to a grad program in a different college, rather than change majors, and got in, but he could have transferred.
Frankly, when paying that kind of money, if you change your mind on major, they better let you have some path. SUNY Bing down the road, forget transfer to B-school but you pay 1/3 the cost.
I have a daughter currently in AEM who is also an athlete. Yes there are a large number of athletes in Dyson, but it is still very difficult to get these spots. In my daughters sport she is one of two. No they do not bring the stats down as they must meet the standards and you will find many of the Dyson athletes on the Academic All-Ivy lists. Dyson is very well recognized and has assisted in her getting very strong internships and a job this fall with a top bank in NYC. You can transfer into Dyson as well, but you will need to make sure that you have a strong performance at Cornell to make the move.
That 10.3% admit rate translates into an RD admit rate of 8.4%. Caveat: not sure how the university includes the 60 students admitted for January start date in the total admit count.
I found this thread and I’m very confused. AEM is listed as a major for students in CALS. My son is interested in an AEM major and an Env Science major (double major). Is majoring in AEM the same as going to Dyson and majoring in AEM? Is the degree worth less through CALS?
@RSFPop
-The undergraduate school of business is called SC Johnson
-Within SC Johnson, a student can choose two schools: Dyson for AEM major (with several concentrations to choose from) and SHA (School of Hotel Administration).
-SC Johnson school of business is an umbrella so to speak because you don’t submit college application to SC Johnson
-Dyson AEM major submits application to College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
-Hotel Administration major submits application to SHA
A degree from Dyson is called AEM, it won’t say “Business Administration” and an AEM degree from Dyson even if associated with CALS will not ‘dilute’ the degree. With a 3% acceptance rate it is very impressive.
From the link above:
“Because of the Dyson School’s unique location in Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), one of the world’s leading land-grant colleges, students can easily combine their AEM major with a focus or double major in the life sciences, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, or applied social sciences.”
Does anyone have data on the ED acceptance rate for Dyson? I know overall for Cornell there is an ED advantage but since they accept by School I wasn’t sure how much it helps. Anything to improve that 3% would be nice!
The stats for overall ED applications have increased by 78% over the years at Cornell with the majority of the slots going to legacy and athletes:
“Of the nearly 26% accepted student, 23.3% were legacy students (children of Cornell alums) and 13.4% were athletes, The Sun reported.”
So the 128 spots for Dyson were uber competitive for 2017 admissions. My suggestion is to really show strong interest in studying business at Cornell with the essay prompts, Getting A’s in rigorous math and science classes and having leadership / entrepreneurship experience. Cornell’s business school is different than others because their requirements include a lot of math and science courses. A student who shows they can handle these types of courses in addition to a demonstrated interest in business is what they’re looking for.
